Over the last 40 years, The Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society (BCGHS) has worked to share and preserve the history of our community and its people through the sale of books, presentation of community programs, and by assisting individuals with their historical and genealogical research.
We are a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization and our annual dues are tax deductible. In addition to receiving the Spring and Fall issues of The Blount Journal, annual membership dues also support other projects which includes; donations of local history books to the Blount County Public Library, binding of local history materials like death certificates and journals into hard-bound books, the preservation of other materials acquired by the Society, etc. We appreciate those who have supported us in the past and hope everyone will consider membership for 2025.
Member dues can be paid by three different methods:
1. If you choose to pay online via PayPal message us directly
2. If you choose to pay online via chime,Message us directly " and follow the instructions. A $25
3. If you choose to pay in person, BCGHS personnel are usually in the office at the Blount County Public Library on Thursdays to accept a $25 payment via check or cash only.

Last night, February 11, 2025, Lester Presley presented a program on his Great-Uncle Technical Sergeant Ross Howard Thompson who was a World War II hero from Blount County. The Blount County Genealogical and Historical Society (BCGHS) would like to thank the local media for helping to promote this event. The Blount County Public Library provided a rotating slide on their video boards, Linda Albert wrote a wonderful article that appeared in the Daily Times newspaper, and Libby Cunningham did a feature story that appeared last night on the WBIR Channel 10 television station. The cold rainy weather kept attendance of the event below what was hoped for, but those that showed up seemed to really enjoy the program.

Elly Davis, a BCGHS volunteer, has embarked on an enormous project to transcribe original Civil War-era letters. We are posting many of those letters on our website and invite you to follow along as the project matures. Many thanks to Elly for her dedication, expertise, and many hours of labor as she chips away at this project ... for the enjoyment and enrichment of all.
