A post from a few years ago:
Buckeyes....I love them. They are a sweet confection made from peanut butter and chocolate. In my opinion, no one could ask for a better combination.
My clients will often ask if one food is better than another because of its nutritional value.
Foods are not good or bad. We do not assign a moral value to food. Does it mean that all foods are the same? No, foods have different types of nutritional value, but it doesn’t make one food “better” than another. It is one of the many reasons why a variety of foods is so important. Some people see food in terms of calories or the types of ingredients it has. However, food is so much more than this.
Food is an experience and can give you a feeling of nostalgia. Take the buckeyes for example. I love buckeyes because chocolate and peanut butter combined taste so good. I also love them because they remind me of my best friend, Rachel who used to make them for our family. She made buckeyes for us several times each year, and I always looked forward to receiving (and eating) them. When I first got to know Rachel many years ago, she would make the buckeyes along with some other delicious goodies. She quickly learned that buckeyes were my absolute favorite, and would give me my own stash that I did not have to share with the family (ssshhh! don’t tell them).
I miss receiving buckeyes several times a year, but more importantly, I miss my very best friend.
I received these wonderful goodies from Rachel’s Mom yesterday who also knows how much I love them.
As I sat in front of the Christmas tree last night enjoying my buckeyes, I thought of Rachel and the wonderful years we had together as great friends. ❤️
So you see, food is more than just a source of energy. There is satisfaction, taste, pleasure, and sometimes even special memories.
If you want a buckeye (or something else) and the thought comes up that you shouldn’t eat it, remember that food is just food. It doesn’t make you “better” for eating certain foods or “worse” for eating others. Take the morality out of it. Enjoy it without guilt. Savor it! Afterward, move on to thinking about other things in life. ❤️
