Did you know that foods marketed to kids may not be the best option for snacks?

In these examples we can see foods may give an illusion of offering nutrition benefits that are not very significant or overlook ingredients such as added sugars.

Veggie straws/chips: although there may be some added micronutrients from the addition of vegetable powders, overall these are going to be similar to potato chips. They should not replace vegetables in the diet. These could be a helpful way to introduce the idea of eating vegetables to picky eaters, however.

Kids yogurts typically contain way more added sugar than “adult” yogurt. Added sugar should be limited in the diet and avoided in children under 2. It would be better to offer a plain, full fat yogurt and dress it up with fruits, seeds, etc.

Have you been told to eat a diet of bananas, rice, applesauce and toast during a GI illness?

While this diet may contain a lot of foods that are high in soluble fiber which may help thicken loose stools, there really isn’t any scientific evidence to back this diet up. So this is really fiction!

Instead, try to continue to eat a variety of nutrient dense foods during illness. It is important to continue to include nutrient dense proteins and fats in addition to carbohydrates during illness. Smaller portions may be better tolerated. It’s also important to include plenty of fluids during times of illness!

✨Let’s look at milk subs for toddlers! ✨

As you can see, not all “milks” are equal! While these substitutes are generally fortified with calcium, the calorie and protein content is often not comparable. Many milk alternatives also contain significant amounts of added sugars.

Your toddler may not even need a milk substitute if they are eating a wide enough variety of foods with meals and snacks.
