A heartwarming story from the Pittsburgh, PA Maxim Healthcare office: one patient's family shares what it's like to travel with a nurse. 💙

Rebecca's son, Hudson, requires complex medical care.
For Rebecca's family, traveling with a private duty nurse isn't a luxury—it's a lifeline. It allows them to care for Hudson at home, keep their family routine, and continue living life fully. From supporting Hudson's care to helping her daughter compete in tennis across the country, Maxim's team makes it all possible. "We wouldn't be able to travel without a nurse. It gives us a sense of normalcy. Allows us to be a family."

Rebecca's top travel tips for families with medically fragile kids:
☑️ Use a color-coded travel bag for medical supplies
☑️ Know both agency and airline rules ahead of time
☑️ Keep all medications/liquids accessible for TSA
☑️ Stick to your child's normal routine as much as possible
☑️ Bring nurses you and your child feel comfortable with

Thanks for everything you do, Maxim nurses!

Juvenile arthritis (JA) isn't a single disease, but rather an umbrella term for a group of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that can develop in children under the age of 16.

The immune system, which usually protects the body from germs, becomes confused and mistakenly attacks healthy joint tissues. This causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness and can sometimes lead to long-term joint damage.

Recognizing the signs:
➡️ Persistent joint pain, swelling or stiffness (often worse in the morning or after rest)
➡️ Limping (especially in younger children, who may not verbalize discomfort)
➡️ Unexplained fevers
➡️ Fatigue or irritability
➡️ Rash, especially in systemic forms
➡️ Reduced range of motion in joints

If you notice any of these symptoms lasting several weeks, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional. Early detection leads to better outcomes and helps children stay active and engaged.

Beginning your first nursing job can be exciting, challenging and overwhelming.
You've worked hard to get here, but stepping into this new role often comes with a steep learning curve.

From balancing responsibilities to managing emotions, the first year is crucial for building confidence and honing your skills.

Here are some tips:

1️⃣ ASK QUESTIONS without hesitation.
Asking questions is a sign of commitment, not weakness. Your coworkers, supervisors and mentors want you to succeed. Whether you're unsure of a procedure or need clarification about your patient care plan, speak up.

2️⃣ BUILD a strong support system.
Your colleagues are some of your greatest assets during your first year. Surround yourself with people who can offer guidance and serve as positive influences. Forming bonds with nurse mentors not only makes the workplace more enjoyable but also gives you someone to lean on during tough moments.

For support beyond work: Join online forums or social media groups for new nurses. These communities can make you feel less alone and provide helpful advice.

3️⃣ Take care of YOURSELF, too.
It's common to feel drained as you adjust to emotional situations and a fast-paced environment. To maintain your energy and mental health, implement self-care routines into your week.

Self-care tips for nurses include packing meals and snacks for your long shift, staying hydrated, prioritizing sleep on days off to recharge and practicing mindfulness or breathing exercises to de-stress quickly.

Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself allows you to provide the best care for your patients.

4️⃣ REFINE your communication skills.
Effective communication is essential in delivering quality care. Whether you're giving a report to colleagues, educating patients or talking with family members, clarity and empathy go a long way.

Good communication builds trust with both patients and your team, which is foundational to your success.

"This year we were able to host a graduation ceremony for a few of our pediatric patients.

Congratulations to Jaxon on graduating from 8th grade! We can't wait to see what the future holds as he starts his high school journey.

Also, a special shout out to Jaxon's brother, Eastyn, who received a medal of achievement for making major academic strides this year.

We are so proud of both of these young men and all of our graduates who were unable to attend due to some unexpected weather.
It is such an honor to be able to celebrate these milestones with our patients and their families.

Twelve-year-old Maxim Healthcare Services patient Ava is living proof of the saying, "There's no place like home." After being sent home for hospice care, and thanks to the care of her collaborative healthcare team of physicians, in-home nurses and family, Ava's health saw a remarkable improvement over the course of the past year.

Our story began at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Erlanger Hospital in Tennessee where Ava was being treated for pneumonia and respiratory failure. Her mother, Megan, crossed paths with Taylor, a Maxim nurse who would later become an integral part of Ava's care team. Their meeting marked the beginning of a life-changing partnership.

At their first meeting, Taylor told Megan all about Maxim and how our team of dedicated and passionate nurses could help Ava with in-home care. This short conversation moved Megan and piqued her interest in inquiring about in-home care for her daughter.

Ava's full story is now live on our blog: https://www.maximhealthcare.com/healthcare-blog/the-power-of-pediatric-home-healthcare-avas-story/

In 1987, President Reagan recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This initiative aimed to raise public awareness about the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities. It also sought to provide encouragement and create opportunities to help individuals reach their full potential.

At Maxim Healthcare, many of the patients we help care for have developmental delays and challenges that can complicate daily life. Thanks to the support of our caregivers, we have witnessed numerous individuals grow and thrive, and we are grateful to be a part of their lives.

This Black History Month, we're sharing Chamberlain University's Notable Black Nurses in History article to celebrate trailblazers in our industry.

Here's one example: Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first Black woman to earn a professional nursing license in the U.S.

From their 2022 article: "While many African Americans served as nurses before her, Mary Ezra Mahoney often carries the distinction of being the first Black nurse in history to earn a professional nursing license in the U.S. and the first to graduate from an American nursing school. Born to freed slaves, she worked as janitor, cook, washerwoman and nurse's aide over the course of 15 years at the New England Hospital for Women and Children, according to the National Women's History Museum. At the age of 33, she entered the hospital's nursing program and graduated 16 months later. As the first professionally trained and licensed Black nurse, she championed increased access to nursing education and fought against discrimination in the profession throughout her career, supporting the creation of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) in 1908."
