Reiki Research: The Power of Reiki for Children Fighting Cancer

Can the system of Reiki support children undergoing one of the most intensive cancer treatments?

A 2019 pediatric oncology pilot study published in the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing explored exactly this question — examining whether Reiki treatment could reduce pain in children receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplants.

What the research found was quietly powerful:
• Significant pain reduction during and after Reiki treatment
• Sustained relief into the evening and following day
• No side effects, no equipment, no interference with medical care
• Reiki treatment safely delivered by trained oncology nurses

This small but rigorous study reminds us that Reiki Ryōhō has always been about reducing suffering through presence, simplicity, and compassionate care — even (and especially) in clinical settings.

Research like this doesn’t make Reiki something new.
It helps articulate what careful practice has long shown.

Buddy is enjoying gong music while I tweak my website and Reiki Level 1 class agenda/verbiage. Oh, and he also spent 10 full minutes on my lap as I meditated!! (That’s the second lap-sit in less than a week!!)

As I Sat In Peace (“SIP of the Divine” as Suzanne Giessman calls it), I could feel Buddy staring at me (pet-parents know this feeling well). So I placed my hand on him and he relaxed into the meditation with me. This is the first time in years that he has allowed me to share a meditation space with him.

He always allows the Sonic Slider tuning fork, but not meditation, so I am just grateful to have understood what he wanted.

And isn’t he also just so cute when he does the bunny paws? 😻

What if Reiki’s effects could be measured—beyond belief or placebo?

A placebo-controlled study of 120 software professionals in India explored the impact of hands-on Reiki, distance Reiki, placebo Reiki, and no treatment on workplace stress over 21 days.

The results were striking:
• Hands-on Reiki reduced stress
• Distance Reiki worked just as effectively
• Placebo Reiki showed no change
• No intervention meant no improvement

This research matters because it goes beyond expectation and belief. By including a placebo group, the study clearly demonstrates that Reiki’s effects on stress are not psychological suggestion, but something deeper and measurable.
