"I’ve never had a straightforward and easy case since I’ve been up here.”
US Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Ted Borny expected cool but clear skies for a short rescue flight to Afognak Island. But Alaska didn’t cooperate.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 as the volunteer civilian component of the United States Coast Guard. The Kodiak Flotilla was founded in 1978 and currently has over 70 members who give countless hours in support of the Coast Guard and its missions, with a special emphasis on recreational boating safety. While we are not paid for our efforts, we receive tremendous satisfaction for a job well done. We have proven valiant throughout the years and take the oath of membership seriously.
Current programs the Kodiak Flotilla is involved with include but are not limited to: the Recreational Boating Safety Visitor Program, which provides local businesses and other program partners with free literature and other information about boating safety; free Vessel Safety Checks for recreational vessels, including paddlecraft; public education classes including “About Boating Safely”; the annual “Kids Don’t Float” poster contest which has reached more than 300 students annually since its inception in 2012; upkeep of the “Kids Don’t Float” life jacket boxes, which provide loaner life jackets free of charge to any child or adult at the entry ramps and launch ramps in both City of Kodiak harbors; and the “Coastie the Safety Boat” program, which teaches important water safety concepts to hundreds of Kodiak children each year through visits to the elementary schools and appearances at other community events. In addition, we are rebuilding our boat operations program. In the past, we have had several members who have dedicated themselves to public affairs, marine safety and environmental protection, and directly augmenting the active duty Coast Guard.
At more than 70 members strong, and with close proximity to two municipal boat harbors, several popular recreational areas, and the largest Coast Guard base in the nation, the opportunities for involvement abound. We invite anyone who is interested to come to a meeting and learn more about us!
