Every chair has a story. Tonight, we celebrate the heart behind them.

✨ 15 Days of Chairs & Care | Day 15 ✨

On this final day of our chair series, we are honored to feature volunteer and artist Bonnie Dillard.

For Bonnie, the chair itself is a symbol of care. To sit with someone is to slow down. To lower yourself eye to eye. To listen. To be present.

Her imagery centers on the octopus, a creature that is intelligent, adaptable, colorful, and full of life. Its organic shapes invite curiosity and playfulness. Bonnie shares that while hospice work is often serious, bringing joy and even a sense of humor into those sacred moments is essential for everyone involved.

This piece reflects not only creativity, but the spirit of compassionate presence that hospice volunteers offer every day.

Tonight, these chairs come together at the Hearts for Hospice Gala ❤️

Every chair has a story, and some stories are stitched together, one piece at a time…

✨ 15 Days of Chairs & Care | Day 14 ✨

With just ONE DAY until the Hearts for Hospice Gala, we are honored to feature a truly collaborative piece titled “Sewn Throne.”

Created by Joan Altenhof, Linda Dorner, Jill Skaw, and Vernie Swanson, this remarkable chair reflects decades of friendship and a shared love of sewing and quilting. All four artists began sewing when they were young and later joined the Bear Paw Quilt Guild together. When presented with the unusual request to “quilt a chair” for Hospice, they accepted the challenge as a team.

This antique armchair was thoughtfully restored with care and respect for its history. The wood was refinished by hand, preserving its grain and character. The worn upholstery was replaced with a vibrant quilted design inspired by traditional blanket patterns. Individually crafted panels were created separately and then assembled into one cohesive work, bringing warmth, texture, and community spirit to life. The project was made possible through the donation of the chair and the generous mentorship that helped shape its final form.

“Sewn Throne” represents collaboration, continuity, and compassion. Much like hospice care itself, it reflects many hands coming together to offer comfort, dignity, and support during life’s most meaningful transitions.

These one-of-a-kind chairs will be auctioned tomorrow night at the Hearts for Hospice Gala ❤️

✨ 15 Days of Chairs & Care | Day 13 ✨

Today we are pleased to feature local artist Shelley Paulson and her piece titled “Curious Octopus Stool.”

Shelley has lived in Kodiak for 27 years and considers herself a hobby artist with a wide creative range. Over the years she has explored watercolor, acrylic, glass etching, mosaic, tin jewelry, and paper collage, the medium she now enjoys most. Her most notable work was the 2018 Crab Fest poster, but at heart, she simply loves to create.

Encouraged to paint a stool, Shelley immediately envisioned an octopus wrapping its long legs around the form. The result is a vibrant mixed-media paper collage that developed over two weeks. What makes this piece especially captivating are the images hidden within the image itself. The octopus is composed of magazine fragments, with subtle imagery forms within the head and tentacles.

The longer you look, the more you discover. What can you find?

Shelley shared that great value in life comes from slowing down and noticing the little things. The volunteers who serve Hospice do just that; offering presence, listening, and small acts of care that make an immeasurable difference during life’s most challenging moments. She is honored to support their work in this creative and meaningful way.

✨ 15 Days of Chairs & Care | Day 12 ✨

Today we are pleased to share “Blue Moon Dance” by Sandee Drabek, a whimsical and thoughtful chair that invites us to notice what quietly unfolds around us.

Though her interest in art began early, Sandee’s career as a special education and kindergarten teacher shaped her creative path. She wove art into multisensory learning experiences and continued teaching after-school art programs. In retirement, she deepened her artistic connection to the community, carving soapstone replicas of ancient lamps and painting commissioned wooden bowls throughout the state.

Inspired by blue poppies and bunnies — species not indigenous to Kodiak, yet thriving here — this piece reflects the beauty of adaptation and belonging. Sandee carefully studied the flowers and observed rabbits at dusk and dawn to recreate their subtle movements. Set against a near-black background to suggest night, the chair carries a gentle reminder that life continues in quiet ways, even when we are not watching. If we pause long enough, there is much to see.

Having lived in Kodiak since childhood, Sandee recognizes the importance of showing up for one another in whatever ways we can. She feels honored to support Hospice through her art.

Today we are pleased to share “KEEPING AFLOAT” by Antoinette Walker, a restored and reimagined chair that honors history, texture, and storytelling.

Antoinette’s love of art began young and expanded through years of exploring oils, watercolor, collage, and eventually encaustic. A class at Kodiak Community College helped shape her belief that nearly anything can become art. She creates layered pieces that invite viewers to see the world differently and to recognize the stories held within everyday structures and objects.

For the Hospice Gala, chairs offer a joyful shift from her usual work. This one spoke to her through its rough-hewn wood and visible past. She sanded the back to highlight the grain and rebuilt the seat to embrace contrast and character. The nautical theme and weathered finish came together naturally, honoring both where the chair has been and what it can become.

Antoinette shared her appreciation that Hospice of Kodiak exists to support the wishes and needs of those nearing the end of life, offering care and guidance when it matters most.

Today we are pleased to share “Bloom Where You Are Planted” by Eva Holm, a whimsical, hand-crafted chair that celebrates creativity, care, and the beauty of reimagined materials.

Eva has felt called to create for as long as she can remember. Guided by curiosity and learning through the process itself, her artistic journey has included work in Kodiak schools, local theater, and countless experiments with fiber, wool, and secondhand materials.

Inspired by items waiting for a new purpose, this chair was created over six weeks using shrunken sweaters, wool roving, and hand-felted flowers. Thoughtfully sewn and designed to be removable and washable, the chair is meant to feel inviting. With curved arms made from sweater sleeves, it’s intended to offer the warmth of a gentle hug.

Eva shared that Hospice has been a comforting and supportive resource for her family and many others in our community, and she is grateful to support our work.

Today we are pleased to share “Finding Wonder in Winter,” by Shelly Lawson, a playful and thoughtful chair created in acrylic and inspired by the quiet beauty of the colder season.

An artist with a lifelong connection to nature, Shelly finds joy in exploring many mediums and in creating alongside others. Art is approached as a present-moment practice, free from expectation, where the act of making is just as meaningful as the finished piece. Whether working in watercolor, gouache, pottery, or acrylic, the process itself is calming, grounding, and restorative.

Inspired by the shifting seasons, this chair reflects a love for winter and its small surprises. While winter can feel challenging for many, this piece highlights its charm, beauty, and moments of wonder. The hope is that it brings a sense of whimsy, joy, and lightness, even in the quietest months of the year.

Shelly also shared appreciation for Hospice and Palliative Care of Kodiak and the care they provide to families during overwhelming moments. Having this kind of support in our community brings comfort, reassurance, and a sense of being held when it matters most.

Today we are pleased to feature local artist Marina Thomas and her chair titled “A Stoat Amongst the Roses”

An artist for as long as she can remember, Marina found connection and comfort through creating. Her work is shaped by curiosity, nature, and a love of exploring many mediums, with pen and ink remaining a favorite.

This chair reflects the quiet strength found in the natural world. A stoat nestled among nootka roses speaks to resilience, playfulness, and beauty that continues despite challenging conditions. Painted in acrylic and sealed for durability, the imagery invites us to slow down and notice the small moments that make summer feel full.

Marina also shared her appreciation for Hospice and Palliative Care of Kodiak. Having experienced medical uncertainty herself, it brings her comfort to know that thoughtful, compassionate care is available here for patients and families when it is needed most.

Today we are pleased to feature Linda Freed, with assistance from Maggie and Alan Schmitt, and their piece titled “A Pair for Spring.”

With a lifelong love of sewing and knitting, Linda brought her favorite techniques into a new form for this project. Using fabric as her primary medium, she transformed two simple folding chairs into something soft, thoughtful, and full of possibility. The process required careful problem solving, especially when securing the sewn elements to the chair frames, but the result feels both fresh and familiar.

This piece invites us to look again at the ordinary. A reminder that creativity and beauty can be found anywhere, even in the most everyday objects, when we take the time to imagine what they could become.
