Is Your Fitness Routine Outdated?
First off if you do have a fitness routine, Congratulations. You are actively trying to improve your health.
However, many people are still exercising in ways that Science has now shown to be less than beneficial.
Take stretching for instance.
Stretching is one of the most commonly applied activities in fitness programs and is often prescribed by therapists for tight, sore muscles. However evidence shows that it is not as beneficial as once thought and may even be harmful.
Many elite athletes have given up stretching and improved their performance. A 2014 study has shown that pre workout stretching reduced the power of skeletal muscles. An earlier study in 2009 revealed that sprint times were actually slower after stretching.
In over 20 years as a massage therapist I saw over and over again clients who could not understand why they were so stiff and sore even though they followed a strict stretching routine. It is even possible to injure yourself by stretching too deeply.
Once I started practicing Hanna Somatics I quit stretching and have been able to improve my mobility ever since.
It is impossible to lengthen a muscle by pulling on it. Since the brain controls movement, habitually tight muscles need to be addressed at the brain level.
