I had such a wonderful time meeting new parents and other lactation professionals today at WIC and Indiana Health Center’s World Breastfeeding Week event!

You don’t need to keep your baby awake for them to sleep at nighttime.

The crazy thing about babies is that they can’t get enough sleep (if we’re being honest, this is what I have in common with them).

Sleep encourages sleep!

Don’t create a miserable evening full of crying by all parties in hopes for a long stretch at nighttime. When their bodies rest, they learn what wonders rest can do for them and they crave more.

Evening naps don’t need to be eliminated. 🌼🤎

There has long been a stereotype that doulas are here to work against the wishes of medical staff.

Even being in several doula groups, I see more of it than I’d like to. “How do I convince my client that her doctor is wrong? The doctor says she needs a C-section and I’m trying to tell her that she doesn’t. The doctor wants her to get this unnecessary blood work done and she doesn’t need it, how do I get her not to do it?” The list goes on and on.

I’m not here to work against nurses and doctors. I am not a medical professional; I’m a a support person with expertise, and while I’ll always encourage my clients to ask questions and advocate for their personal goals and desires, I’ll never tell them what they should or shouldn’t do.

That’s not my job.

I am not a replacement for your doctor or midwife. Instead, I am an asset to them! We work together in your best interest.

I don’t personally have a birth philosophy, but even if I did, I’m not here to project my personal beliefs on your experience. I’m here to support you in your goals.

Fridays are feel-good days.

I like to think of Fridays as a day to reset. When the week feels heavy, Fridays are the perfect day to do things that make you feel joy.

Get outside today. Put your baby’s feet in the water. Go to Target. Buy an overpriced iced coffee. Eat some fresh fruit.

The week may have felt heavy, but the weekend doesn’t have to!

It’s not unheard of for me to meet a client at the door as they bring their baby home, but it also isn’t unheard of for me to assist them during teething sleep regressions and anytime within the first 18 months.

A postpartum doula doesn’t lose their value after the first few weeks. The first year and a half are so trying with infant feeding, sleep regressions, creating routine, etc.

I’m here to help whenever you need me, even beyond those first trying weeks.
