I have a sad announcement to make - my bees are GONE. Not dead, just GONE, so there will be no honey this year. It's been a bumpy year (understatement!) and I haven't been able to tend to them as well as I'd like. Wax moths got ahead of us and hopefully the bees found a nice big hollow tree to settle into. There's always next spring to make a fresh start, Lord willing!

First of all I love the prints featured in this article, especially the first one.

As many of you know, my mother passed away 1 month ago....

That afternoon I went down to the bee yard - for 3 reasons...there was a task I NEEDED to tend to, knowing the coming week was going to be crazy busy, AND, rain was on the way overnight, AND, to tell the bees about my mother. And well, 4 - they're darn good therapy. I'd been "keeping them informed" of her condition and that I was her caregiver, so that's why I hadn't been able to visit them and tend to them as often as I should. A couple of my hives were getting very crowded and I was a bit worried they'd swarm on me before I could do anything about it.

Lo and behold, as I approached the yard, my eye spied a nice bigger-than-a-basketball sized cluster on a low hanging (and easy to reach!) pine branch. One of my hives had indeed split off and swarmed! Didn't even stop, I rushed right back up to the barn, yelled to Tony, "we have a swarm!!!" grabbed what I needed to catch them. Tony followed and was a great help, along with the neighbor's turkey that was following us around that day. (Another story altogether. LOL!). Success! My first ever swarm catch!

Tony said, "your mama did that". lol. She loved my beekeeping tales. ❤️

Two weeks later, caught another, smaller swarm and they also were located very close by and on a low hanging branch.

They're doing very well so far! The first one especially is going like gangbusters!

Never underestimate the grains of truth in "folklore"!

Hoped to be able to get a small extractor but it just wasn't in the cards for this year... So.... "crush & strain" it is and that's what's happening this week. Long, slow, process - but so worth it in the end! (taking a little break now) Maybe next year! *fingers crossed* 🐝🐝🐝
