It's time for another "Wednesday Why" at Midwest Center. Valerie has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with MCYF for 15 years!

Valerie says, "I stay with Midwest because I truly love DBT (dialectical behavior therapy), and I love to see our clients and their families get their lives back. DBT has helped me in my private relationships as well as all of my relationships with my coworkers and clients. Practicing DBT as well as teaching this wonderful therapy has truly helped me gain my life worth living."

We thank Valerie for her many years dedicated to treating youth, and her many other contributions here at Midwest Center!

Our Clinical Team spent time with the Utilization Review Director over the weekend to strengthen their skills in thoroughly documenting resident care in their charts.

Accurate documentation is an essential part of ensuring efficiency and creating a clear picture of each patient for every team member who accesses their chart.

Team building matters. Recently, our clinical team took their meeting off site for some much‑needed collaboration and, of course, some good food. Thank you for all that you do!

Here is Therapist Megenn M. sharing her "why":

“I joined Midwest Center for Youth and Families in 2021 where I completed my therapy internship and transitioned to a full‑time therapist in 2022. The reason I joined MCYF as a therapist is because I want to help others heal from their personal struggles. Many of my residents have struggled with trauma and abuse, which has made them believe they are a ‘bad kid’ or do not deserve happiness."

"Because of my own history of abuse as a teenager, I can relate to that thinking and wish I had someone to help me recognize I was worthy of respect. That is the reason I stay. I see each of our residents’ strengths and positive characteristics, even when they struggle to see them themselves. I enjoy working with my East Unit residents and supporting them through such an important stage in their lives.”

Here is another "why" that will just make you feel all the feels from Therapist Megenn M. Her "why" is "I joined Midwest Center for Youth and Families in 2021 where I completed my therapy internship and transitioned to a full-time therapist in 2022. The reason I joined MCYF as a therapist is because I want to help others heal from their personal struggles. Many of my residents have struggles with trauma and abuse which has completely re-wired their brains into thinking they're a "bad kid" or don't deserve happiness. Due to my own history of abuse as a teenager, I can relate to their thinking and wished I had someone to help me recognize I'm worthy of respect. This is the reason I stay - I see each of our residents' strengths and positive characteristics, despite them struggling to see them themselves. I enjoy (primarily) working with my East unit residents and helping them in this major transitionary life stage."

As we share some of the best “Whys,” we’re highlighting Wendy, our House Supervisor, who is coming up on her third year with us.

Wendy's why:
"I believe in the quiet power of showing up. I believe that even on the hardest days, presence can be healing. I get to be a steady place when everything inside someone feels loud, confusing or broken. I do this work to remind them, sometimes with words and sometimes through consistency, that they matter, that they are worthy of care and that their story is still unfolding. Even when progress is hard to see, hope is still being planted. I choose compassion, patience and belief because sometimes being one safe adult can change the direction of a life."

Thank you, Wendy!
