Idaho families face new Medicaid therapy caps and fear worse is coming after Gov. Little proposed eliminating speech, occupational and physical therapy coverage.

Medicaid notified providers Thursday, January 8, 2026 of a significant change in policies that could have a substantial impact on the services of our families. They are now limiting the children we serve to 20 visits a year, with any additional visits requiring pre-authorization. Unfortunately, the process for pre-authorization has not been defined, nor the criteria. Additionally, waiting for the authorization could pose a delay in services and limited access to care. Most of the children we service have therapy needs well well beyond 20 visits. The children we service are working to develop critical life-skills and the more services are delayed, the greater impact it has on the progress of these children.

As a provider, I will continue to advocate for the children and families I serve. I will submit pre-authorization and documentation as needed once procedures are clearly defined by Medicaid. I will also continue communications with Medicaid regarding this policy change.

Families and caregivers, I ask that you reach out to your Medicaid officials and Idaho legislators as well and advocate for the services your children need and deserve.

This session the leprechauns are helping use out in therapy. We are working on eliminating the production of /t/ for /k/ (saying "tup" for "cup") by using minimal pairs and helping the child understand the differences between the two sounds. All of this is taking place while having fun helping the leprechauns fill their pots of gold.

It's fall, which calls for pumpkins, leaves and corn kernels in our sensory bin. Little ones enjoy interacting with the sensory bins as they work on their targets during therapy sessions. It's an excellent way to keep them engaged and make therapy fun. We get lots of practice on speech and language targets while having a great time together.
