🟢 Garden Hide-and-Seek Champion: The Cucumber 🥒

Have you ever turned over a leaf in the garden and gasped at the massive cucumber hiding beneath it?

Cucumbers are pros at playing hide-and-seek—one day they’re small and crisp, the next they’re as big as your forearm! 😆

Here’s what to do when you discover a few sneaky giants:

🌱 Save the Seeds – Let those oversized cukes fully ripen on the vine (they'll turn yellowish and get tough), then scoop out the seeds, rinse, dry, and stash them for next season.

🍋 Make Cucumber Lemonade – Slice cucumber and add to a pitcher. Add lemon juice with a little honey or mint for a refreshing twist on a summer classic. Let cool in the refrigerator for a few hours and enjoy.

🥒 Chill & Refresh – Slice them up and place over tired eyes at the end of a long garden day. Instant spa vibes!

🥗 Whip Up a Cucumber Salad – Toss with vinegar, dill, lime juice, red onion, and a dash of salt for a crisp summer side.

🥒 Quick Pickles – Slice and soak in vinegar, sugar, garlic, and spices. You’ll have pickles by tomorrow!

🌿 Add to Herbal Mocktails – Muddle with mint, basil, or lavender for a cooling herbal drink.

Cucumbers may be sneaky, but they sure are generous 💚

Plant Your Carrots Now for a Sweet Fall Harvest 🥕🍂

Don’t let the summer garden slow down—now’s the perfect time to plant carrots for a crisp, sweet fall harvest!

Carrots thrive in the cooler days of fall, and when planted in late July through early August, they’ll have just enough time to mature before the frost. In fact, a light frost actually enhances their flavor, turning starches into sugars!

🌱 Tips for success:

Loosen your soil: Carrots need deep, loose soil to grow straight and long.

Choose shorter varieties if your soil is heavy or shallow (like ‘Paris Market’ or ‘Danvers’).

Keep the seed bed moist during germination (they can take 10–20 days to sprout!).

Thin seedlings early to avoid overcrowding.

Mulch to hold moisture and keep soil cool.

📅 Sow now, harvest in 60–80 days—just in time for cozy fall meals and garden-to-table snacks!

Have you planted fall carrots before? Let me know your favorite variety or if you’re giving it a try this year!

🍅 What Is Blossom End Rot And How Can You Prevent It?

If you’ve ever spotted dark, sunken spots on the bottom of your tomatoes, you’re dealing with blossom end rot. It’s a common garden problem — and thankfully, it’s preventable!

🔍 What Causes It?
Blossom end rot is caused by a calcium deficiency in the developing fruit. But it’s not always about the amount of calcium in the soil — it's often about inconsistent watering, which affects how well plants absorb calcium.

🌧 Common Triggers:
• Fluctuating soil moisture (too wet, too dry)
• Rapid growth from too much nitrogen
• Poor soil structure or low calcium levels
• Root damage from cultivation or transplanting

🌿 How to Prevent It:
✅ Water consistently — especially during hot spells
✅ Mulch to maintain even moisture
✅ Avoid over-fertilizing with high-nitrogen feeds
✅ Add calcium if needed (crushed eggshells, lime, or a foliar spray)
✅ Don’t panic! Affected fruits can be removed, and the plant can still produce healthy ones

Blossom end rot is frustrating, but it’s also fixable with a little attention and care. Keep your tomatoes happy and hydrated, and they’ll keep on producing! 💪🌱

Have you experienced this common issue?

Sourdough Crostini + Garden Fresh Goodness 🌿🍅

There’s nothing quite like the taste of summer on a slice of toasted sourdough.

Freshly baked crostini—crisp, golden, and full of tangy sourdough flavor—paired with juicy garden tomatoes, fragrant basil, a drizzle of olive oil, and a sprinkle of sea salt… that’s sunshine on a plate.

Whether you're hosting friends or just treating yourself to a quiet moment on the porch, this easy combo is a seasonal favorite around here.

July in the Garden

Mid-summer is here, and your garden is likely bursting with life — and maybe a few weeds too! 😅 Here are a few things to focus on this month:

✅ Harvest Time – Tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, herbs, and more almost ready to pick. Harvest often to encourage more growth.
🌱 Succession Planting – Still time to sow quick-growers like lettuce, radishes, kale, beets, and bush beans for a late-summer or fall harvest.
💧 Water Wisely – Deep, less frequent watering is best. Early mornings are ideal to reduce evaporation and mildew.
🌼 Deadhead + Prune – Keep flowers blooming by removing spent blooms, and tidy up overgrown herbs like basil and mint.
🐛 Pest Patrol – Check for cabbage worms, beetles, and aphids. Encourage beneficial insects and try natural deterrents if needed.

Take a moment to slow down and enjoy the pollinators buzzing around your blooms, the flavor of a just-picked tomato, or the cool soil between your fingers.

🌞 The garden is alive — and so are you.
