It’s RTS Founders Month! Did you know…
The RTS leaf and teardrop was designed in 1983, two years after the RTS program began. It was created as an image that would resonate with those experiencing deeply-felt, profound emotions, particularly from the death of someone who brought meaning to their lives. The leaf floating on water represents the dynamic nature of grief, captured in the photo with tiny ripples spreading outward from the leaf. The leaf’s green color represents life, and its upturned edges, hope. The knowledge that the leaf’s color will change with the seasons represents what some call the “seasons of grief,” each season with its own characteristics of sadness and beauty, with hope for a season to come. The drop of water on the leaf, whether its meaning is interpreted as a dewdrop from early morning freshness or the fallen tears of a mourner, draws the viewer into the photo, portraying the complex, yet unavoidable, life experience of loss.

Pictured here are the original drawing (black and white) and the current design (color).

It’s RTS Founders Month! Did you know…
Resolve Through Sharing was featured in the cover story of a 1993 issue of RN Times, a publication of the Los Angeles Times. The issue highlighted the work of nurses who served at that time as RTS bereavement counselors to help families after the loss of a pregnancy or baby. The story shares the challenges many families faced when well-meaning friends and family members told them to “just forget about it and have another baby.” RTS-trained nurses instead acknowledged the family’s grief, offering support and memory-making opportunities.

At the time of publication, RTS-trained professionals were present in over 1,200 hospitals throughout all 50 states. Now, Resolve Through Sharing has an international presence, with programs or RTS-trained staff not only in all 50 states, but in Canada, Colombia, England, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and more.

It means a lot to us when we hear that we've made a difference from other members of the community. Providing evidence-based training and developing grief support resources are some of the ways we try to do our part to support grieving families and loved ones.

Tomorrow evening, we join families around the world for the Global Wave of Light.

On Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00 pm (local time), candles will be lit across every time zone in honor of babies lost too soon — creating a continuous wave of light that encircles the globe.

Our family at Bubba’s Fund will be lighting a candle in memory of Charlie Lonning Weber, and we invite you to do the same — whether in remembrance of a loved one or simply in solidarity with families who have experienced loss.

How to participate:
1️⃣ Light a candle at 7:00 pm local time.
2️⃣ Let it burn (or glow) for at least one hour.
3️⃣ Take a photo or short video and post it using .
4️⃣ Tag so we can share and hold space together.

As we approach tomorrow’s remembrance, we also want to honor the incredible organizations supporting families throughout the year:
• Star Legacy Foundation – advancing research, education, and advocacy around stillbirth and infant loss.
starlegacyfoundation.org
• March of Dimes – improving maternal and infant health and supporting families through every stage of pregnancy.
marchofdimes.org
• Share Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support, Inc. – providing compassionate peer support to anyone who has experienced pregnancy or infant loss.
nationalshare.org
• Resolve Through Sharing (RTS) – providing education and compassionate support for families experiencing perinatal, neonatal, pediatric, or adult loss, and training healthcare professionals to offer relationship-based bereavement care.

• Sands - baby loss charity (Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Society) – connecting families worldwide through remembrance and awareness. Based in the United Kingdom.

Your light — whether shared online or held quietly at home — helps break the silence, honor the love, and bring comfort to those who need it most. 🌈

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day—a time to honor babies who have died, to honor parents and loved ones who carry memories of their babies with them, and to bring awareness to pregnancy and infant loss. We encourage everybody to take time to observe this significant day. One way of doing so is by lighting a candle tonight at 7:00 p.m. and letting it burn for at least one hour. People around the world will be participating in this Wave of Light to show love, support, and awareness.

It’s RTS Founders Month! Did you know…
Resolve Through Sharing’s first webinar was held 15 years ago in May 2010. Enhancing Your Role as a Coordinator: Adding Guided Participation to Your Skills was presented by then RTS Director Dr. Rana Limbo and Bereavement Coordinator Waneeta Everson.

Since then, we have worked with many other amazing presenters to create the RTS professional perspectives webinar series. While our earlier webinars were only available in a live, virtual format, we now have over a dozen on-demand webinars available for purchase on our Learning Management System. https://resolvethroughsharing.myabsorb.com/ #/catalog/58d159d3-abbc-4da9-9d1c-98d0711644e9?_sort=newest

Walk to Remember is this weekend!

Walk to Remember is a way for parents, family members, and others to honor and celebrate babies who have died and promote public awareness about perinatal death. The event takes place each October, which is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. The event includes a brief program, activities for parents and children, refreshments, and a commemorative walk. Participants are invited to bring a photo or memento of their baby who died. This event is co-sponsored by Resolve Through Sharing (a program of Gundersen Medical Foundation) and Mayo Clinic Health System-La Crosse.

It’s RTS Founders Month! Did you know…
1981—RTS perinatal bereavement training began at Lutheran Hospital (now Emplify Health by Gundersen) in La Crosse, WI. RTS developed from an interprofessional team’s interest in creating a way of caring for parents when a baby died that was sensitive, compassionate, and inclusive of the post-hospitalization time. Two maternal nurse practitioners, Kathryn Hill Goettl and Carolyn Smiley, provided the practice model for RTS, which was based on their experience working with families grieving the death of a baby.
1983—First RTS coordinator, Rana Limbo, and RTS planning committee member, Sara Wheeler, learned of interest nationally in replicating the RTS model. Leaders at Gundersen asked that they, together with Goettl and Smiley, write a training manual for perinatal bereavement care to be used nationally.
1985—The first national RTS Coordinator Training was held in La Crosse.
2004—RTS added materials focused on adult death. Over the years, these materials were reconstructed twice, eventually transforming into the course we have today—RTS Bereavement Training: Adult Death.
2015—Bereavement Training: Neonatal and Pediatric Death was introduced.
2020—RTS began offering a live, virtual training experience.
2023—RTS Bereavement Coordinator Certification was introduced.
