Eighth Judicial District Criminal Court Launches Veterans Treatment Court on Veterans Day 2024 – Seeks Veteran Mentors
In honor of Veterans Day 2024, Eighth Judicial District Criminal Court Judge Zachary R. Walden proudly announces the launch of a Veterans Treatment Court, designed to address the unique challenges faced by veterans who struggle with mental health issues and substance abuse. "Establishing a Veterans Treatment Court was one of my primary goals when I assumed office," said Judge Walden. "This program, modeled after our successful Recovery Court, aims to support those who have bravely served our country but now face personal battles that require specialized care."
The Veterans Treatment Court will be funded by the Campbell County Coalition of Recovery Resources, supported by legal settlements obtained from pharmaceutical companies. The program will be managed by Community Health of East Tennessee (CHET), which also oversees the Eighth Judicial Recovery Court and Mental Health Court.
The creation of this new court is a collaborative effort made possible by various local and state partners, including District Attorney General Jared Effler, Public Defender Leif Jeffers, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, the Tennessee Department of Corrections, the VA’s Outreach Office, and other treatment providers.
Similar to the established Recovery Court, veterans must undergo an application and screening process to be considered for the program. Once accepted, participants will engage in an intensive, hands-on recovery program tailored specifically for veterans, lasting between 12 to 24 months. The program provides structured clinical treatment, as well as connections to VA resources, housing support, and other essential services.
Each participant will also be paired with a Veteran mentor, who will meet with their mentee weekly and attend court sessions alongside them every other month. Veterans interested in volunteering as mentors are encouraged to sign up through the provided link to receive updates on upcoming mentor training sessions.
