Cannot think of a better message to honor moms. We do it no matter how exhausted, sick, anxious, discouraged or depleted we feel.

You are amazing. Your baby (toddler/kid/tween/teen) may not say it but they know it and they feel it.

We love to share research! Here’s a new study with a few key takeaways:

📈 Improved breastfeeding experience can be protective against post-partum depression.

Getting help with breastfeeding theoretically should help improve that breastfeeding experience, as previous studies have shown.

I think we can also extrapolate the opposite notion here- having a less than ideal breastfeeding experience can contribute to INCREASED feelings of anxiety/depression. IBCLCs certainly can and want to help with that, too, but even moreso, we want to validate what you’re feeling and tell you you’re not alone. 🫂

Size DOES in fact matter… at least when it comes to pump fl**ges 😉

This newly published article shares that fl**ge fitting is important and individualized. A smaller, properly fit fl**ge can result in both increased comfort and milk output as shown in this study. That’s a really big deal given 94% of moms in the US will pump at some time during lactation!

Most women in this study were sized as 15 and 17mm. Most pumps come with 21mm fl**ges and ABOVE.

If you’re going to work so hard to pump milk for your baby, we want it to be comfortable and effective!

We see it every day, but the research backs it up… women with access to breastfeeding support are better equipped to continue breastfeeding.

This study showed us that women with a higher degree of access to “breastfeeding advice,” are more likely to continue breastfeeding at 1 and 6 months (the time of survey completion in the study).

We would be remiss if we didn’t state that all breastfeeding advice is not equal. There’s a lot of questionable advice out there on the internet.

So, whether you’re a client of the past, present or future, we are here to help! And if you know a new mama who could use the help (because can’t we all?!), send them our way!

Happy moms 💁🏻‍♀️ = Happy babies 👶🏻

This recent study that looked at data from over 500 moms found 2 things helped reduce the risk of infantile colic:

1️⃣ Post-partum maternal psychological well-being; 75% of babies without colic had moms who reported “optimal post-partum emotional well-being.”

2️⃣ Exclusive breastfeeding; Infants NOT exclusively breastfeeding had nearly twice the risk of developing colic vs those who exclusively breastfed.

Anyone who has experience with colic knows how exhausting and stressful it is. 😞 Learning that exclusive breastfeeding can be protective against colic is pretty amazing and good information for those who are trying to decide on a feeding plan for baby. And let’s keep working to support maternal psychological well-being post-partum. It’s not only good for mom, it’s good for baby!

Ni**le shield no more, for this sweet girl and her excited mama! This little cutie was started on a ni**le shield while in the hospital when she struggled to latch directly to the breast. Within 4 weeks, the shield is gone and baby transferred FIVE (yes, 5!) ounces directly from the breast at her recent visit!

So how did we do it?! 🤔

1️⃣ Used the shield when we knew we needed it
This babe had a little bit of that pretty typical newborn jaw recession which made it really hard to maintain a latch directly to the ni**le. Then she got used to the shield and (necessary) bottle supplementation which made it harder to latch her directly to the breast.

2️⃣ Provided some suck training before feedings
This isn’t something I do regularly, but for this little sweetie, it made an almost immediate difference in her non-nutritive and nutritive suck.

3️⃣ Introduced positive latching practice directly to the breast
Some babies will latch directly to the breast on the second side or after getting through the initial letdown with the shield when they have had the edge taken off their hunger.

4️⃣ Practiced patience
This family did an amazing job of meeting this baby where she was at the time and keeping their eye on the prize. They supported her the way she needed it when she needed it and were slowly but surely able to pull back on some of the initial supports they were providing. This mom was so dedicated to making breastfeeding work and her patient persistence paid off!

So proud of this dynamic mama-baby duo! Just sad I won’t be seeing as much of them 🥲
