The stigma of mental health in the Hispanic/Latinx community has played a major role to
accessing care. Generally the community deals with these issues privately due to avoiding negative labels. This can cause distress not only to the individual but their family members as well. Metro Suburban in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness is now offering support groups for Spanish speaking community members to learn how to cope.

We always embrace summertime Chicago. There are so many outdoor activities to do! With the days heating up please do not forget to check on your elderly family members and neighbors. Here are some tips to remember:

☀️Do not only rely on fans as cooling devices. This does not reduce body temperature.
🌸 Go to your local library, mall, or contact your local government offices for cooling centers.
☀️Keep your shades/drapes covered .
🌸Use window reflectors to reflect the heat back out.
☀️Weather strip the doors and windows.
🌸Drink plenty of water!

We had the opportunity to meet with the team from Solutions for Care in North Riverside. Serving the Cicero, Berwyn, and North Proviso communities they offer numerous services such as assistance with utility cost, medical and nutritional programs, adult protective services, caregiver support, and community care programs to name a few. Attached is the link to their site.

They are also currently staffing for a Care Coordinator and Advocate. They have a very dedicated team.

Have you seen this documentary? I just finished it and I’m a mess. It’s a beautiful love story between Spanish superstar and his 95 year old Tata (his great grandmother’s sister) who helped raise him.

During the pandemic, Miguel took over his Tata’s 24 hour care moving into her tiny apartment. His love and care, and their daily live shows on social media gave Tata a new life.

The documentary chronicles the difficult, beautiful and priceless 100 days this couple spent together.

Tata always aware that it would end and Miguel dealing with the inevitable guilt but reality that he had to reclaim his life.

Go watch this on Netflix if you haven’t.
