This week's question: Why should I prearrange my funeral when I have life insurance for that?
It’s a fair and frequent question—life insurance can cover funeral costs, so why plan ahead? The key difference is money vs. decisions. Life insurance provides funds, but prearranging a funeral reduces the burden on your family in ways money alone doesn’t.
Here’s how they differ:
1. Life insurance pays later, decisions happen immediately
A life insurance policy typically takes time to pay out—sometimes weeks or even months. Funeral arrangements, however, need to be made within days. Without a plan, your family may have to front costs or make rushed choices.
2. You remove guesswork for your family
Prearranging lets you decide things like:
Burial vs. cremation
Merchandise: Casket, Flowers, Urn, or Keepsakes
Music, readings, or traditions
Otherwise, loved ones are left guessing what you would’ve wanted—often during a very emotional time.
3. You can lock in prices (not at all locations, but we do!)
Many funeral homes allow prepayment or price-locking. This can protect against inflation in funeral costs, which life insurance doesn’t automatically adjust for unless your policy grows. Additionally, with prepayment, it is not all due at one time, you can make monthly payments.
4. It reduces stress and conflict
Even close families can disagree about arrangements. A prearrangement avoids disputes and helps everyone focus on grieving instead of logistics.
5. Insurance money may be used for other things
Life insurance often ends up covering more than funeral costs—debts, mortgage, daily living expenses. If your funeral is already planned (and possibly prepaid), that money can go where it’s needed most.

In the end, Life insurance = financial support and a Prearranged funeral = clear instructions + peace of mind.
They complement each other rather than replace each other.
