Funeral Friday: Where did the phrase “six feet deep” come from?

The term is commonly linked to the time of the Great Plague of London, when it’s believed that officials recommended burials be at least six feet deep to help prevent the spread of disease. While historians debate whether this rule was consistently enforced, the phrase endured and became a cultural expression for burial depth.

Today, burial depths can vary based on state and local regulations and cemetery practices, but “six feet deep” remains a familiar saying.

KY Law states: Where the disposition of the body is by burial and the outer container for the body is made of concrete, metal, fiber glass, or other impervious material and it is hermetically sealed, all parts of such container shall be buried to a depth of at least two (2) feet below the level of the natural surface of the ground. All other burials shall be at least three (3) feet below the level of the natural surface of the ground measured from all parts of the outer container.

Funeral Friday | How Do I Become a Funeral Director?

Have you ever felt called to serve families during one of life’s most meaningful moments? Becoming a funeral director is a unique and rewarding path that blends compassion, professionalism, and attention to detail.

If you’re in Kentucky, or nearby in Indiana, here’s a general look at how to get started:

1. Complete your education
Most funeral directors begin with a degree in mortuary science from an accredited program. In Kentucky, you can obtain licensure without this step.
2. Apprenticeship (Internship)
Both Kentucky and Indiana require hands-on training under a licensed funeral director. This is where you gain real-world experience serving families.
3. Pass licensing exams
You’ll need to pass the National Board Exam and/or meet any state-specific testing requirements.
4. Continue learning
Funeral service professionals complete ongoing education to stay current and provide the best care possible.

This profession is about more than logistics, it’s about guiding families with empathy, respect, and dignity when they need it most. If you’ve ever considered this path or have questions about funeral service, we’re always here to share insight and support.

This Mother’s Day, we hold space for every kind of love and every kind of loss.

At Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home & Cremation Services, we know this day can be tender for those who are missing their mom. Whether your memories are fresh or softened by time, the love you shared never fades.

“A mother’s love is eternal—
It lives in every quiet moment,
In every lesson carried forward,
In every beat of a grateful heart.”

Today, we honor the women who shaped us, comforted us, and remain a part of who we are. Though they may no longer walk beside us, their love continues to guide us in ways both seen and unseen.

If you’re grieving today, you are not alone. May you find gentle moments of peace, warm memories that bring a soft smile, and the quiet reassurance that love like a mother’s never truly leaves us.

With care and compassion, always.

Funeral Friday | Transferability: What If I Move?

Life can take us to new places, whether it’s across the state or across the country. One common question we hear is: What happens to my prearranged funeral plans if I move?

The good news is that with our pre-arrangements, your plans can move with you.

Our pre-need funeral arrangements are designed to be transferable, meaning the funds and details you’ve set aside can be applied at another Dignity Memorial funeral home in your new area. While we can't speak for others, most funeral homes will work together to honor your wishes as closely as possible, even if they are not a Dignity Memorial provider.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:
* Review your plan details to understand transfer options.
* Notify your current funeral provider if you relocate.
* Connect with a local funeral home in your new area to coordinate the transfer.

Planning ahead is about peace of mind—and that shouldn’t change just because your zip code does.

If you have questions about transferability or want to review your existing arrangements, we’re here to help guide you every step of the way.

Funderal Friday: How do I donate my body to science in Kentucky?

In Kentucky, whole-body donation is typically arranged through medical schools such as the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

1. Pre-register with a Willed Body Program
You can sign up in advance by completing official donation forms through your chosen university. Once registered, you’ll receive confirmation and should share your wishes with your family and healthcare providers so they can carry them out at the time of death.

2. Important eligibility considerations
Acceptance is not guaranteed. Donors must generally be 18 years or older, some medical conditions or circumstances surrounding death can prevent acceptance, and programs can decline a pre-approved donor at the time of death.

3. Location matters
Some colleges only accept individuals who die in their state or certain counties surrounding their school.

4. Costs and services
If accepted, most programs cover cremation and transportation, unless otherwise stated. If death occurs outside of the programs service area there may be an additional cost to transport that donor into their care by the program or a local funeral home.

5. What happens to my body after donation?
Donors help educate future doctors and advance medical research. You may be assisting students or engaged in research for months or years. After your time in the program, you will be cremated and either returned to your family or whatever wishes are outlined in your agreement with the program.

6. Have a Plan B
At Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home & Cremation Services, we are honored to assist families with coordinating body donation, completing necessary paperwork, and ensuring your wishes are carried out with dignity and care. In the event a donor is declined at time of death it is important to have your wishes on file at a funeral home and have the conversation with you family to be prepared for all options.
