While varicose veins are more likely to appear as you get older, they’re not an inevitable part of aging, and treatments are available to manage or prevent them from getting worse.

You may have heard people say, “I don’t want to end up with my grandma’s legs…”

But here’s the truth: vein issues don’t just happen overnight — and they’re not just cosmetic.

Conditions like spider veins, varicose veins, heaviness, aching, swelling, or restless legs can all be early signs of venous disease. Ignoring them doesn’t make them go away — it allows the condition to slowly progress.

Family history plays a role, but genetics are not destiny. Being proactive makes a difference.

Stay on top of your leg health:
• Don’t ignore aching, throbbing, or swelling
• Pay attention to visible vein changes
• Seek evaluation early rather than waiting

The earlier venous issues are addressed, the easier they are to manage — and the better your long-term leg health will be.

Healthy legs aren’t about age. They’re about attention and prevention.

If you have venous reflux and only treat the surface spider veins without addressing the underlying issue, several problems can occur:
1. Spider Veins Will Likely Return – Since the root cause (poor circulation due to venous reflux) remains untreated, new spider veins will keep forming over time.
2. Treatment Results May Be Short-Lived – Even if the initial treatment works, the pressure from the underlying reflux can cause the veins to reopen or new ones to appear nearby.
3. Symptoms May Persist or Worsen – Underlying venous reflux can cause ongoing leg pain, heaviness, swelling, and fatigue, which won’t improve by treating only the surface veins.
4. Risk of Developing Larger Varicose Veins – If venous reflux progresses, it can lead to more significant venous insufficiency, resulting in bulging varicose veins, skin changes, and even ulcers over time.
5. Wasted Time and Money – Treating spider veins without addressing reflux might require multiple sessions, with limited success, making the process frustrating and costly.

For the best and longest-lasting results, it’s essential to diagnose and treat venous reflux first (through procedures like endovenous laser therapy or sclerotherapy for larger veins) before focusing on cosmetic spider vein treatment.

A vein ultrasound is important because spider veins are often not just a surface problem. An ultrasound helps determine whether there is underlying venous reflux, valve dysfunction, or hidden varicose contributors that are increasing pressure in the superficial vessels.

The goal of screening is to make sure treatment is targeted and effective rather than only addressing what you can see on the skin.

According to the Society for Vascular Surgery guidelines, evaluating deeper venous function is part of comprehensive vein assessment when there are signs that spider veins may be connected to larger vein disease.

If underlying reflux is present, treating only the surface spider veins without addressing the source can lead to:
• Faster recurrence
• Incomplete improvement
• Ongoing vessel pressure that creates new spider veins

In short, ultrasound helps guide a treatment plan that targets both the cause and the visible symptoms.

To set realistic expectations about vein treatment- it takes time to see best results.
If you’re thinking about summer goals — shorts, swimsuits, warmer weather — starting now matters because vein treatments aren’t instant.

Most vein treatments work by causing the treated vessel to gradually break down and be reabsorbed by the body. That process takes weeks to months, and some people need multiple sessions depending on vessel size, location, and response.

There’s also a healing window to consider. Bruising, redness, or temporary darkening of treated veins can happen, and you usually want that fully settled before you’re showing more leg.

Don’t cut corners! Visible veins on the surface can often point to an underlying issue that’s not immediately apparent. That’s why we use ultrasound and advanced tools like vein lights to assess and diagnose any hidden conditions, ensuring we create the most effective treatment plan for you. Treating the surface veins without addressing the root cause may not lead to with best results.

👉 The biggest myth we hear: ‘Vein treatments are cosmetic.’ The truth? Untreated vein disease can progress and cause serious complications. Don’t ignore the signs.
