Every October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we share a behind-the-scenes story about an employee who plays a role in caring for our breast cancer patients. Laurl Sisco, a radiation therapy technologist for the last 24 years, not only cares for breast cancer patients, but leads by example—turning personal loss into purpose and inspiring all of us. Here’s more about Lauren, who also created the artwork she’s standing next to:
What do you love most about your job?
“I love what I do. For me it’s more than just giving treatment—it’s about giving patients hope, a smile, kindness and understanding, through one of the hardest times in someone’s life.”
How has breast cancer impacted your life professionally or personally?
“I come from a medical family—my father was a doctor, my mother a nurse. I was still a young radiation therapist when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. At first, she responded to treatment and was considered cured, but the cancer came back. She was only 50 when she passed away. I took a leave of absence from my work but eventually came back to Grossmont. That was 23 years ago, and I’ve been helping cancer patients ever since.
For you, it goes beyond the treatment room. Tell us about that.
"One of the reasons I love working for Sharp is its mission to make a difference in the world and people's lives. This inspired me to create a walking team 15 years ago at Sharp to support breast cancer awareness. Today, our team proudly walks in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event sponsored by the American Cancer Society."
