Margaret, 34, was admitted to Adventist Health in Bakersfield from home for severe lower abdominal cellulitis and pain across the lower quadrants of her abdomen that had been persistent for several days. She was also in respiratory failure and was immediately placed on BiPAP and eventually had a tracheostomy to support her breathing.

Once stabilized, Margaret was admitted to Kindred La Mirada. She immediately started working with our rehabilitation team and was able to progress out of bed into a wheelchair. Shortly after, she soon could stand with moderate assistance and could walk 40 feet. She was also weaned off the ventilator and transitioned to BIPAP.

Margaret was then decannulated and discharged on a nasal cannula to a skilled nursing facility in Bakersfield for continued rehabilitation. She is looking forward to returning home to her family and her cats! "Getting out of bed was very difficult but rehab helped a lot, and respiratory therapists were very attentive. I will always remember how much the nursing staff did for me and rehab for getting me out of bed," shares Margaret. "I started off very scared, but they helped me do it."

Travis was admitted to Lakewood Regional Medical Center on February 16th for acute respiratory failure. Travis was intubated several times and received a tracheostomy. Once stabilized, he was transferred to Kindred La Mirada on March 27th.

While at Kindred, Travis was aggressively weaned from the ventilator and was decannulated prior to discharge. In addition, the team started with bedside range of motion and Travis progressed quickly to taking steps. Travis’ positive attitude and dedication to recovery helped him dramatically. By the time of his discharge, he could walk 150 feet on a walker. On May 21st, Travis was discharged home and was excited to see his cat!

"I appreciate all the staff. They were very kind, even when I could have been rough," shares Travis.

Ricky was admitted to Kindred La Mirada from Rancho Springs Medical Center for respiratory failure, with a tracheostomy, 24-hour ventilator support, and a gastrostomy tube for nutrition. At first, Ricky needed a lot of encouragement to participate in therapy, as he was scared that his oxygen level might drop. He was bed-bound and slept most of the time, but with the help of our staff and his son, who was always at his bedside, Ricky slowly participated in rehab. Once he began to see the positive results of it, he continued without hesitation.

Ricky’s goal was to ambulate while sustaining good oxygen levels and before discharge, he could walk 250 feet and was only on two liters of nasal cannula. Ricky looked forward to going home, which he was able to do in early April.

"I feel 100% better than when I arrived. All staff were very caring and attentive. They made me feel like their family," shares Ricky.
