Too often, conversations about mental illness are shaped by myths instead of facts.

In this episode of Hope Starts With Us, NAMI Chief Advocacy Officer, Hannah Wesolowski, is joined by Shannon Scully, Director of Criminal Justice Policy and Initiatives, to talk about the harmful misconceptions that link mental illness with violence—anda why those beliefs can prevent people from getting the help they need.

As Shannon shares:

“Mental illness is not an indicator for violence and it is definitely not an indicator for violent crime.”

In reality, people living with mental health conditions are more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators. This conversation explores why understanding that truth matters—and how advocacy can help ensure people experiencing mental health crises receive care and support instead of punishment.
