Think it’s the flu...but there’s no fever? 🤒

Carbon monoxide poisoning can look like common illness at first. But carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless—and symptoms can quickly become serious.

Watch for signs like:
Headache
Dizziness
Nausea or vomiting
Shortness of breath
Confusion
Sleepiness
Blurred vision

Severe exposure can lead to loss of consciousness, brain damage or death. If multiple people in your home feel sick at the same time, get fresh air immediately and call 911.

Know the signs. Trust your instincts. Protect your home.

A recent outpatient surgery patient shared these kind words about their experience—recognizing Dr. Raihanahmed Chowdhury, nurse Yolanda Shultz, recovery nurse Natitia Malloy, CRNA Kerry Esprit, surgical assistants Angela Cooksey and Samuel Ameyaw, and nurses Michelle Goldsmith and Jenny Lucceus.

Great care is never delivered by one person alone. It takes teamwork, skill and compassion at every step. We’re grateful for team members who work together to create exceptional experiences from pre-op to recovery.

For years, Sherline Lawson felt like she had to sit on the sidelines.

As a mother of five, she wanted the energy to keep up with her kids—but weight and health challenges made that difficult. With support from the UM Charles Regional Weight Loss Program and Dr. Erik DeAngelis, Sherline committed to lifestyle changes and underwent gastric sleeve surgery to improve her health.

Today, she has lost 61 pounds and counting and is finally doing something she once avoided: jumping right in and playing alongside her kids.

That’s the kind of experience Dr. Sagal Mohamed Ali strives to create every day in our gastroenterology practice.

Dr. Ali partners closely with her patients, taking time to listen and build care plans that reflect their individual needs. As a first-generation Somali American and Black female physician, she is also committed to ensuring all patients feel seen, respected and supported.

Kindness is powerful—and our infusion patients felt it in a big way.

Students from T.C. Martin Elementary School’s Destination Imagination club recently created “care bags” for patients receiving infusion treatments at UM Charles Regional. After organizing a schoolwide donation drive, the students assembled the bags and personally presented them to our leadership team on January 31.

Their thoughtfulness will help bring comfort to patients during treatment, and that means so much.

Congratulations to this inspiring team for placing second in their school competition and advancing to the state tournament. We’re cheering you on!

Protect your household with these simple steps:
• Place generators at least 20 feet away from windows, doors and vents

• Never use generators, grills or camp stoves inside your home, basement or garage

Appearance can be deceiving—especially when it comes to weight and health.

According to Teri White, RN, at UM Charles Regional Medical Center, true health isn’t defined by the number on the scale. Activity level, nutrition, sleep, stress and important lab markers all play a role.

In the Winter 2026 issue of Maryland’s Health Matters, learn how balanced eating, movement and small lifestyle shifts can help you build a healthier future.

Earlier this year, team members participated in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day service project by collecting personal care items for local seniors.

Because of their generosity, boxes filled with shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toilet paper and other essentials were delivered to the Waldorf Senior Center. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped sort and organize these items!
