Trivia Tuesday⁉️Did you know La Porte City Specialty Care got its start back in 1966? Directly in front of the current building, the original facility provided care for residents for 37 years. It was known as Colonia Manor. Both buildings were built on property acquired from Irving Anton, one of the original board members.
In 1965, like-minded community members came together to invest in an enterprise to benefit the community and its elders. At a cost of $260,000, individuals bought shares to finance the new center. The board proudly reported that they never solicited nor obtained any federal financing or special grants for this project.
In August of 1989, Care Initiatives purchased Colonia Manor, and the original building then received a new name in 1997, changing to La Porte City Nursing & Rehab Center at the same time the facility became certified to provide skilled rehabilitation in addition to long term care.
In 2003, additional farmland was purchased from the Anton family, and a new structure was built and opened in 2004. Today, this building is nearly double the size of the original building and was nicknamed “the Lodge” for its woodsy decor. Now in its second decade, this building provides a larger footprint for residents’ comfort and to accommodate the team needs. The new facility also allowed the opportunity to provide outpatient therapy services open to the community. By comparison, not only did the facility grow, but so did the team. In 1966, there were merely 14 team members; today La Porte City Specialty Care employs 64 people. For 60 years now, our team has been dedicated to compassionately serving others!
