As part of the Fulton County Opioid Awareness Initiative, the Cuba Church of the Nazarene participated in a 13-week series addressing Substance Abuse Awareness. Our very own Roger Larson was the facilitator. During the series, an average of 16 people attended. The topics addressed included the Prevalence of Substance Abuse, the Symptoms of Substance Abuse, the “Myths” of Substance Abuse, How Do Substances Affect the Brain and What Do You Say to Someone Who May Have A Substance Abuse Problem? Those who participated are now considering the “next steps” with their newly developed awareness. Thank you Roger for being in service to the people of Fulton County. Congratulations to all who participated and good luck on your next steps!

Today begins a month of focus, education, and awareness of the call to healing for those with addictions and their loved ones. The US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) stats tell us that 48.7 million people nationwide struggle with substance abuse according to the same survey. For their National Survey on Drug Use, 25% of Americans nearly 70 million people admitted they use illicit drugs, according to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use. Of those an estimated 28.9 million Americans age 12 or older, or 10.2% of this population, had an alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the past year, according to 2023 NSDUH data.

These statistics highlight the pervasiveness of substance abuse in the United States and the need for effective prevention and treatment strategies. Currently the estimated population of the United States in 2025 is projected to be 347,275,807 people. The numbers calculate then that 14% of US citizens are suffering from addictions. This figure represents a significant increase from previous years, reflecting ongoing population growth trends. We can help in North and Central Illinois. www.ncbhs.org
