What causes varicose veins and spider veins?

Hundreds of one way venous valves direct blood up the leg toward the heart.Gravity pulls blood back down the leg in reverse direction over damaged or "leaky" valves.
Increased blood and pressure in the veins force fluid shifts into surrounding tissue, causing edema.

This is called venous reflux or venous insufficiency.
