Last month marked 3 years since I opened my private practice, so I figured it’s time for a re-introduction!

I’m Cade (they/he), a trans speech-language pathologist living in Seattle, WA and the owner of Loud & Clear Speech Therapy. I started this practice in 2022 for a lot of reasons, but the biggest one was to give myself space to practice in a way that ran counter to the way I’d seen in so many clinical spaces. Speech-language pathology can (unfortunately) be a very ableist field, and there’s a common misconception that SLPs are the ones in charge of “fixing” someone. I’ll probably talk more about this in a later post, but for now, I’ll just say that I prefer being the person giving clients the tools for their toolbox rather than insisting I have all of the solutions (spoiler: I don’t have all the solutions).

My practice has changed a lot over the past three years, and it will probably continue to change over time - just like I have! It’s gone from home visits to office visits to telehealth visits, and has worked with such a wide variety of people across the lifespan. I’m excited to see how it continues to grow, but I know one thing will remain constant - my commitment to supporting those who have most often felt unsupported in their journey.

More about me:

🧠 My areas of clinical focus are gender-affirming voice therapy and neuro-rehabilitation using a person-centered and strengths-based therapy perspective.

🍎 I've lived in Washington state (almost) my whole life, and I have no plans to leave anytime soon - I've called Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Spokane all home! (Spokane for a little too long, tbh)

⭐ I've received the ASHA Award for Continuing Education (70+ hours of continuing education) 3 times... which means I probably need a new hobby.

🗣️ I've been an SLP since 2016 and I am *just* starting to feel like I know what I am doing... sometimes.

Thanks for joining along on this journey! I can't wait to see where else it goes.

just a dumb little post from one trans person to the other trans people in my phone 💕 sometimes (often/always) I hate existing as a small business owner in a capitalist hellscape and then I remember I have free will and can run my business any way I want ~ and the way I want to run it is by existing in community with as many trans folks as possible and using the skills/knowledge I’ve had the privilege of acquiring to support my people. no ads or links or marketing in this post, just love and solidarity.

Big disclaimer: I’m not a mental health professional, and I recommend all of my clients have an established therapist or counselor specialized in working with trans folks.

I had a client tell me this a few months ago, and it has really stuck with me. The role of counseling in gender-affirming voice therapy is often overlooked by both clients and providers new to this area of voice therapy.

It makes sense, though! Voice is such an integral part of your identity, and as folks lean into their authentic identity, there are bound to be some big questions that arise during sessions:

🏳️‍⚧️ “How can I take up space with my voice when I’m so used to living small?”

🏳️‍⚧️ “How do my perceptions and biases of masculinity and femininity influence the type of voice I want to use? What does masculinity/femininity even mean to me?”

🏳️‍⚧️ “Am I trying to change my voice because I want to, or because I feel like I have to?”

🏳️‍⚧️ “How do I practice voice embodiment when I’m so used to distancing myself from my body?”

It’s okay if you don’t have the answers to these questions, or even know where to start - that’s where working with a voice provider skilled in working with trans and gender-diverse folks comes in handy.

Being a small business owner trying to ethically navigate existing in a capitalist hellscape is brutal - ESPECIALLY in the winter time as business slows down (along with income). This is true for all small businesses, including independent and local healthcare providers. Schedules change, deductibles reset, finances are tight, and insurance companies somehow get even slower in their reimbursement - I totally get it. Luckily, there are ways to support your favorite small businesses without spending a dime!

1. LEAVE A GOOGLE REVIEW: This helps direct more traffic to small businesses and encourages new customers and clients to reach out.

2. SHARE A SOCIAL MEDIA POST: The more people know about the cool stuff a small business is doing, the more traffic they get (which = more referrals!).

3. TELL A FRIEND: Or your therapist, or your doctor, or your family member, or your colleagues, or... anyone!

Being a small business owner is challenging, AND it is one of the greatest privileges I've been able to experience in my life. Thanks everyone for the support so far - I couldn't have done it without you.
