Gliding is an extremely common phonological process. Most kids do this at some point as their speech develops. It is also one of the last processes to disappear. Some typical kids without speech disorders don't develop a correct /r/ until 8 years old.

Toys don't have to be expensive to be educational. In fact, simple and open-ended items make great toys that also support language development. Use things you have around the house already. Kids love little containers and playing with cups. These are great items provide easy ways to create language opportunities.

1. Create a cup city! Use cars and drive through the town. Talk about spatial concepts like around, between, and through.
2. Make it into a microphone! This is a great activity for children who are just starting to link vowels and consonants together. Take turns saying short words/sounds into the cups "wow" "whoop" "buzz" "boop."
3. Hide different things under them. Take turns looking for matching objects under the cups. Talk about how objects are similar (bow and string are similar because you can tie them)
4. Stack them up! Practice turn taking and using short phrases like: stack up, one more, put on top, and fall down.

I love this! Functional language is language that you need in different day-to-day situations. For example: greeting, introducing yourself, asking for or giving advice, explaining rules, apologizing, or agreeing/disagreeing. Sometimes children with social communication disorders need to be explicitly taught the rules of everyday social communication that their typical peers would just "pick up."

Speech and language are two very different things!

Speech- the physical movement we use in our body to speak. It is a motor skill and includes articulation, fluency, and voice. These all relate to how we say sounds and words.

Language- refers to the words we use and how we use them to share our thoughts, wants,, and needs. Language is the system we use and it is very complex.

Language skills can include:
-Understanding multiple meaning words: Some words have more than one meaning. "Star" can be a bright object in the sky or someone famous.
-Morphology: Subtle changes in words can create completely different meanings (ex: Friend, friendly, and unfriendly).
-Rules on how to put words together: Correctly forming sentences like "She walked to the new store" instead of "She walk new store."
-And so much more!

Speech and language therapy can look a lot like play. Play is one of the most effective ways to teach communication skills. It enhances learning and helps with generalization. Playing is how children interact with the world. The more you play with your child, the more skills you are teaching them!

Articulation is a motor skill! Just like learning any other motor movement, it takes practice before it becomes automatic. The best type of speech practice is short and frequent! Everyday, practice for 2-3 minutes (100 trials) saying your speech sound.
