Just finished up with my last momma of 2024 💕 I had 2 repeat clients this year, 3 new clients and I also delivered my niece and nephew. Officially clocking out as a doula until January 2025. See yall next year 🥰

It’s world breastfeeding week! I’ve nursed two children 14+ months and I couldn’t be more proud of that! As big of an advocate as I am for breastfeeding, I am very much aware that it’s not for everyone. I tried so hard to nurse Brewer but he needed more calories than what my breastmilk alone could give him. So we nursed, and I pumped, and we mixed formula in the breastmilk and fed him bottles. It was exhausting. I really struggled switching to exclusive formula because I felt like nursing him was the only thing I could control. After all, I had nursed two other babies right?! A wise NICU nurse reminded me that he was NOT my other babies. He’s a different kid and he has different needs. He’s his own person. I cried myself to sleep that night, knowing that for my own sanity I needed to end our breastfeeding journey. But I am SO grateful for the time we got to spend bonding while nursing and I’m so proud of the path I was able to take with the girls. Happy World Breastfeeding Week!

It’s been a HOT minute since I last posted on here. A LOT has happened since March! I got to witness 4 new babies enter our world, 2 of them being my niece and nephew 😍 We had our own babe 6 weeks early and have hit the ground running with his medical appointments and procedures.

January babies!! My first baby of the year was a family that is near and dear to my heart, as they were my first ever doula clients back when I started this journey ❤️ It was so special to see momma bring another beautiful baby into the world! I thought I was going to get to share my birthday with my second baby this year, but she wanted to make an entrance on her own time, about an hour into the next day 😂

As I approach the third trimester in my last pregnancy, I’ve been thinking a lot about items we still need before baby boy comes. As someone who has two other small children, I’m pretty set on all the fun stuff (clothes, toys, larger items). The “essentials” that I will be using everyday are the less “fun” things that no one really thinks to buy for mommas. So I wanted to comprise a list of things that are crucial for moms with new babies to have! Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, the less “fun” things are usually some of the most important and the most needed. Some ideas for mommas include:

✨ breast pads
✨ breast milk bags
✨ ni**le cream
✨ bottle brushes
✨ nursing bras
✨ extra peri bottles (the angled kind)
✨ postpartum underwear
✨ loungewear sets
✨ diapers and wipes
✨ DoorDash gift cards

This is not an all-encompassing list, but I figured this may spark some shopping inspiration for somebody waiting for a new baby to arrive!

2023 brought us 5 baby boys and 3 baby girls! 2024 already has 5 babes on the books! I can’t wait to see what this year holds for us all 💕

Tonight I came across a comment from a doula on social media bashing a hospital and its providers to expecting mommas who were asking for recommendations for OBs.

It got my blood boiling because I work SO hard, day in and day out, as an RN to try to break the stigma around hospital birth. The disconnect between doula work and hospital birthing is HUGE and comments like the ones made are only driving the wedge further and further.

I am a known advocate for being able to birth in a hospital setting AND having an enjoyable experience while doing so. I do everything in my power to ensure my clients’ and my patients’ wishes are respected and that both mom and baby are happy and healthy. But the divide between doulas and hospital staff weighs heavy on my heart.

Sometimes I am reluctant to admit that I am a doula to those who work in healthcare. Other days I’m cringing at the attitudes that other doulas bring in through those hospital doors and the way that they treat the healthcare team. I’ve been on all sides of it. The patient, the nurse, the doula.

We’ve got to start working together as a team for the good of the birthing person and the experience as a whole. We have to try and understand the entire picture. All sides of the situation. We can do better and we have to for the safety of our mommas.
