One of the biggest concerns with breastfeeding, is usually whether or not baby is getting enough milk.
Here are some tips to help you to know if your baby is indeed receiving enough at each feeding.
~If baby is awake and eager, and having frequent feedings on demand 8-12 times each day with an effective and comfortable latch.
~After milk letdown, if you notice baby to have strong and rythmic sucking and hearing swallows. You may also notice that baby has "gulping" swallows. This is a definite difference than when the colostrum was present. This indicates good drinking. You may even notice their ear wiggling in synchronization with their jaw movement.
~Baby may fall asleep at the breast when done, or he/she may pull off of the breast and appear full/content like they just finished a Thanksgiving meal! Also before a feeding, you may notice that their hands are in a fist, and after a feeding their hands are open and relaxed.
~Mom's breasts will feel fuller/firm before a feeding and much softer after a feeding.
~You will also notice baby to have a steady weight gain. He/she should return to their birth weight after 2 weeks after birth, and begin to gain about 5-7 ounces per week until 4 months of age.
~After day 5 after birth their wet and dirty diapers should increase to 6-8 wet diapers per day, and 3-4 dirty diapers per day. The wet diapers should be heavy, and the dirty diapers should transition from brownish/green to yellow/seedy in color and the size of a quarter or larger.
