Recognizing the signs: When your provider shows any of these characteristics, it’s time to seek a new path. Your child’s health and well-being deserve care that respects, understands, and CELEBRATES their identity and experience. Any provider who consciously CHOOSES to disregard you or your child’s unique background (because trust me, it’s a choice) isn’t a safe option. Especially if they’re actively ignoring a genocide or other forms of harm against people who don’t look like them. You and your child deserve better. 🌺

Breaking fast is more than just a meal, especially when many Muslims in Palestine do not have food this Ramadan and are being subjected to forced starvation. May this blessed month bring our hearts together and inspire us to take action, to use our voices, and to break down the barriers that are causing the suffering of so many. Together, let’s use our self-discipline and eagerness this month to continue fighting for the collective liberation of all individuals experiencing violence, displacement, and genocide in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, and the Uyghurs.

Today, as we celebrate , let’s remember to uplift and honor ALL women: regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or circumstance. We stand in solidarity with those facing violence and oppression like the Uyghurs and our sisters in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, and beyond. Together, need to strive for a world where every woman is seen, heard, and valued. Because if your feminism doesn’t include ALL women, then it isn’t true feminism. Do better!

Empower yourself as a healthcare provider, educator, and/or Muslim ally by learning some essential Ramadan vocabulary! 🌙✨ This month, let’s bridge understanding by learning key words like Suhoor, Iftar, and Sawm to better support our Muslim clients/students. These words can also serve as meaningful targets to practice with patients in therapy. When looking for providers to work with children on social communication and concepts related to theory of mind, look for those who speak against harm being done to their fellow human beings. Not ones who are selective with their empathy, because it shows they may need to work on some of these skill areas themselves. Our children learn best from watching us, so let’s show them how to care deeply about others, regardless of our differences.✌️🇵🇸

A lot of people keep telling me that politics need to be kept out of our profession. But the way I see it, they are too perfectly intertwined. I hope this post helps others make that connection too.

It doesn’t matter what population you serve. It doesn’t matter what area of specialty you claim. If you truly value human life and have been paying attention, then you should be speaking up too. I don’t know how any of us can sit across from our patients right now and not picture Palestinians looking back at us. They are watching us, waiting while we fail them over and over again.

The very least you can do is speak up. Or in cringier terms that some SLP’s may understand better, “Use your words.” 🇵🇸

Hey fellow Hoosiers! Come meet me in-person and learn about The Voice Garden LLC’s unique speech-language therapy services at the 2024 Spring Inspiring Abilities Expo on March 9!

The expo offers families and professionals a great opportunity to network with organizations and service providers who meet the unique needs of individuals with disabilities. Visit the exhibit hall to meet and talk with therapy and service providers (such as myself!), nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups, recreation programs and other agencies serving adults and children with disabilities.

FREE admission & parking!

At 9:00 am the expo will feature one hour presentations by keynote speakers for the public and exhibitors will have the chance to network. At 10:00 am the Exhibit Hall will be opened to the public. It will close at 1:00 pm.

We joined the voices of 400,000 individuals from across the nation, all gathered in one place. We screamed, “Not in our name!”

We witnessed the stories and heartbreak of too many Palestinian individuals who lost entire generations of family members. We saw protesters with their land deeds taped to their signs. We saw photographs of their murdered loved ones and cried with them, as it could have so easily been our own family members in each one.

We witnessed. We continue to witness. We have witnessed since this started. And that start date we know all too well wasn’t on Oct 7th.

As SLPs, we cannot speak to communication being a human right of all, while we allow Palestinians to be silenced and dehumanized.

We cannot speak to wanting to help others with feeding and swallowing disorders, while Palestinians are being forcibly starved to death.

We cannot speak to being advocates for children, while staying silent as they’re blown apart and literally losing limbs.

We can’t speak to wanting to support geriatric populations, while we allow the elderly to freeze to death in the cold from being forcibly removed and displaced from their homes.

Otherwise, we are the biggest hypocrites I know.

This is just the beginning. Now is the time to speak up, join the movement, and go to a protest. Educate yourself and follow/elevate Palestinian voices. Here are several accounts to get you started:
