Happy Day!
Jelena Jurlina, director of Ochsner's project management office, said, "Ochsner is making significant strides toward ensuring diverse representation in leadership roles. Our employee resource groups (ORGs) serve as invaluable resources, fostering a sense of belonging and support among peers while creating opportunities for emerging leaders to be inspired and encouraged."
In honor of March being Women's History Month and March 8 being International Women's Day, Ochsner and our employee resource group, WoW (Women Empowering Women), are spotlighting international team members throughout our organization, such as Jelena. This year's theme for Internal Women's Day is . We forge a better world when we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion.
Jelena was born and raised in Croatia before coming to New Orleans in 2001 to pursue studies at Tulane University. "I was drawn to New Orleans' medley of cultures, echoing the allure of my homeland but on a grander scale. The city's cultural mosaic, celebrated through its eclectic cuisine and music scene, captivated me, with festivals like JazzFest and Mardi Gras embodying its unique spirit."
In 2017, Jelena became part of Ochsner's Project Management Office, concentrating on process improvement projects and fostering a lean culture within our system. "Navigating diverse projects can be both daunting and humbling, as very often the project manager finds themselves as the one with the least knowledge in the room. However, at Ochsner, our collaborative ethos and supportive team members have turned this journey into a rewarding one. Together, we're dedicated to making a difference, driven by our shared commitment to our patients, and powered by kindness and determination."
"Moving forward, we should continue to prioritize mentorship opportunities, particularly for underrepresented employees and women. It's imperative to ensure that women are actively included in key discussions and leadership teams, promoting diverse perspectives and contributions in decision-making processes."
When asked how she was empowered to navigate and overcome barriers to inclusion, Jelena said, "I can identify four pillars that provide a solid framework that helped me navigate and overcome barriers to inclusion: Build allies, be a continuous learner, create visibility and lead by example.
