Research continues to support what we see every day in the clinic. A study by Fernández et al. found that Pilates-based exercise was more effective than conventional exercise in reducing pain and improving function in individuals with chronic low back pain.

At 74 years young, Chuck McMath embodies this philosophy beautifully. Recently featured in Chuck prioritizes strength training with a personal trainer twice weekly, practices Pilates 2–3 times per week to support mobility and spinal health, and honors the often-overlooked pillars of longevity: quality sleep, mindfulness, intentional downtime, and time with family and loved ones.

Aging well isn’t about pushing harder—it’s about moving smarter, recovering deeply, and living fully.

✨ How to Start the New Year Strong (and Stay Consistent)

New year. New goals. Same body—so let’s train it wisely.

Here’s a simple, balanced approach to movement for longevity and performance:

Cardiovascular Training
• Aim for 150 minutes/week of moderate cardio (walking, cycling, swimming)
• Or 75 minutes/week of higher intensity intervals
• Start with what you’ll actually do—consistency beats intensity

Weight Lifting (2–3x/week)
• Focus on full-body strength: legs, hips, core, back, and arms
• Strength training builds bone density, muscle, and metabolic health
• Start light, master form, and progress gradually

Pilates (2–4x/week)
• Builds deep core strength, mobility, and posture
• Improves movement quality and reduces injury risk
• The perfect complement to both cardio and lifting
