👉Distraction from suffering: Engaging in constant activities serves as a distraction from the underlying emotional pain and turmoil associated with depression. By keeping busy, one can temporarily avoid confronting their difficult feelings and thoughts.
👉Sense of purpose and validation: Chronic busyness can provide a sense of purpose and validation. Completing tasks and achieving goals can give a temporary boost to self-esteem and make one feel valued and productive, masking the deeper feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness that accompany depression.
👉Avoidance of negative thoughts: Staying perpetually busy helps in avoiding the negative thoughts and ruminations that often come with depression. The constant activity leaves little room for introspection, which can be both a coping mechanism and a way to avoid addressing the root causes of their depression.
👉Fear of being unproductive: There is often a fear of being seen as unproductive or lazy, which can be exacerbated by depression. Chronic busyness can be a way to combat these fears and prove to oneself and others that they are not being idle, even though it may come at the cost of their mental health.
👉Need for control: Depression can make one feel out of control in many aspects of their life. By maintaining a busy schedule, they can create a sense of control and order, which can provide temporary relief from the chaos they feel internally.

👉 Lack of internal validation: Achieving goals often brings external validation, but for those with depression, this does not translate to internal validation. They struggle to feel proud of their accomplishments, leading to a persistent sense of emptiness.
👉 Disconnection from emotions: Depression can cause a disconnection from emotions, making it hard for one to feel the joy or satisfaction that typically accompanies achievement. This emotional numbness can overshadow their successes.
👉 Unmet underlying needs: Achievements may not address the deeper, unmet emotional needs that contribute to their depression. Without addressing these core issues, the fulfillment of goals can feel hollow.
👉 High expectations and perfectionism: Perfectionism and unrealistically high expectations can make achievements feel insufficient. Even significant accomplishments can seem minor and unworthy of celebration, perpetuating feelings of emptiness.
👉 Lack of purpose and meaning: Achieving a goal without a sense of purpose or meaning can feel empty. Depression can strip individuals of their sense of meaning, making even significant achievements feel pointless.

💡Here is an explanation of each of the 5 trauma "stuck points" listed:
1️⃣ The World is Unsafe: After a traumatic event, the fundamental belief that the world is a safe place can be shattered. This can cause one to become hypervigilant and always on the lookout for danger, perpetuating a sense of “global unsafety”.
2️⃣ Trust No One: Trauma often involves a betrayal of trust, especially if it was inflicted by someone close or in a position of authority. This can lead to a broad mistrust of others, impacting all future relationships and interactions as one may isolate and emotionally withdraw as a “protective response”.
3️⃣ Those in Power = Dangerous: If the trauma involved an abuse of power, one may develop a general belief that people in power are not to be trusted and are a source of danger. This can result in the avoidance of situations where power dynamics are at play, a fear of vulnerability, and a fear of not being fully in control of a situation.
4️⃣ Feeling Unworthy: Those who’ve experienced trauma may believe they’re to blame for it, that they’re “broken”, or that they’re “flawed”. This can reinforce the trauma narrative and prevent healing and self-compassion.
5️⃣ Intimacy = Hurt: Experiencing trauma, particularly in close relationships, can lead to an association between intimacy and pain. This stems from the vulnerability required in intimate relationships, which, if exploited, can leave deep emotional wounds. As a result, one may come to equate intimacy with the potential for hurt, leading them to avoid closeness to protect themselves from future pain.

💡Things that take so much strength to survive and work through when you have depression:
👉Actively avoiding substances or behaviours that might temporarily numb the pain of depression but are ultimately harmful in the long run.
👉Dealing with the physical symptoms of depression, such as headaches, fatigue, or changes in sleep patterns.
👉Fighting off intrusive negative thoughts that make you feel worthless and hopeless about your circumstance / the future
👉Persisting with daily activities like bathing, eating, and working, despite the fatigue, low motivation, and numbness
