Yes, we think nasal breathing is a big deal. There is a whole list of reasons as to why nasal breathing is beneficial and superior to mouth breathing. But one of the things that’s doesn’t get emphasizedenough when it comes to nasal breathing is the production of nitric oxide.

🦷Yes, grinding teeth is common, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal or healthy.

According to a recent study, there is a strong connection between bruxism (teeth grinding) in kids and airway constriction and more times than not, this is due to nasal obstruction, enlarged tonsils, or restricted tongue mobility.

While it’s common to assume that sleep bruxism is a result of psychological stress or an imbalanced bite, research now shows us that >90% of the time, it is caused by a breathing issue. And this isn’t only true for kids. Adults with sleep bruxism are also are dealing with a restricted airway.

🚩Bruxism is a red flag for sleep disordered breathing, whether seen in adults or kids, so when signs of teeth grinding are present, it’s important to take notice and get to the root cause.

Functional Airway Evaluation Screening Tool (FAirEST 6) is used by clinicians to assess individuals for sleep disordered breathing and proper development of the jaws.

Click on the link below to screen yourself or child for any of the six “red flags” for sleep disordered breathing. If you have questions or concerns about any of your findings, reach out to schedule a consultation with Dr. Edwards.

Another appliance option used at our office to aid in palatal expansion is the Rapid Palate Expander

Generally speaking, the younger the child, the more effective palatal expansion is. By doing an early evaluation we can identify if a child may benefit from a palatal expander and prescribe the most effective appliance to ensure the best outcome. However, young or old, it’s never too late for palatal expansion. There are options no matter what the age.

One of the options used at our office to aid in palatal expansion is the Schwarz Saggital Appliance. It’s an upper and lower removable appliance, where the patient turns the key twice weekly allowing for controlled palatal expansion. The Schwarz is a great option for younger children ages, but is a little more limited in those whose jaws are already fully developed.

Because it is a removable appliance, patience like the flexibility for oral hygiene reasons, however, the key to success is consistent wear, except for during eating.

Early intervention is key when it comes to palatal expansion! By addressing any potential concerns while the jaws are still developing, we can guide healthy growth patterns and set the foundation for a lifetime of dental and whole body wellness.

To determine if palatal expansion is suitable for your child, reach out schedule a consultation with Dr. Edwards. He can assess your child’s unique needs and provide expert guidance to ensure the best outcomes.

👅👃Did you know that the way your tongue rests in your mouth can play a pivotal role in the development of your nasal passages? That’s because the roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nose.

🌬️ Breathe Right, Feel Right: The positioning of your tongue isn’t just about speech and swallowing – it also influences how you breathe! When your tongue is properly placed against the roof of your mouth, it acts as a natural palate expander, creating more space for your nasal passages. This helps in ensuring optimal airflow through your nose, improving oxygen intake and reducing the likelihood of mouth breathing.

👃 Nasal Development: Proper tongue posture stimulates the expansion of your nasal passages, making it easier for you to breathe through your nose. Lacking proper tongue posture creates a high and narrow palate, which pushes upward on the nasal septum and can cause it to bend to noe side or the other, creating a deviated septum. When you have a deviated septum, it can be more difficult to breathe through one nostril compared to the other, which can lead to more mouth breathing.

👨‍⚕️Prevention Vs. Treatment: While a deviated septum can be treated by an ENT, preventing the development of one is best. Making sure the jaw fully develops and intervening with orthodontic expansion EARLY in the years of development is key! However, it’s never too late to expand the upper arch and reap the benefits of a more open airway.

🌟 Positive Signs of Healthy Jaw Growth in Children 🌟

1. Spaces Between Baby Teeth 🦷:
Noticed those cute gaps in your little one's smile? Those spaces are like nature's way of saying, "We've got room for bigger and better adult teeth!" Embrace the gaps - they're positive indicators for a bright, aligned future!

2. Aligned Upper and Lower Jaws 😁:
When your child flashes that grin, check if the upper teeth sit comfortably over the bottom ones. We don’t want to see top teeth protruding out in front of bottom teeth or bottom teeth extending out in front of the top teeth anywhere on the arch.

3. Proper Lip Seal & Nasal Breathing👃🏻: Watch for that peaceful lip seal when your kiddo is at rest or asleep. Comfortable lip closure, coupled with nasal breathing, not only promotes better sleep but is also a fantastic sign that the tongue is in proper position to allow the jaws to grow harmoniously.

Do you know of an infant struggling with gassiness, spitting up often, or displays clicking or smacking noises while eating? Maybe they have been labeled as ‘colicky’ and have been treated with gripe water or gas drops in an attempt to soothe their upset tummies. Babies displaying any of these signs should be evaluated for a tongue and/or lip tie.

See the study as to why…

“The human nose was designed for breathing (and smelling) whereas the mouth was designed for eating, drinking and speaking. However, it has been estimated that up to 30-50% of modern adults breathe through their mouth, especially during the early morning hours….

However, breathing through the mouth most of the time was not nature’s intention. Many studies have demonstrated that chronic mouth breathing can result in a number of adverse health consequences.”

More information about the benefits of nasal breathing and the negative effects of mouth breathing can be found in the clinical review in the link below:
