Learning that a newborn has hearing loss can be an upsetting and emotionally challenging experience for many parents, leaving them feeling lost and uncertain about what the future holds. Infants who have hearing loss can do well with early diagnosis and treatment, which is positive news. Yes, they can even develop language, communication skills, and strong connections with the world around them, resulting in a vibrant, rewarding life!

Two of the most reliable solutions for assisting babies with hearing loss are hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Hearing aids are frequently the initial treatment solution for infants who have varying degrees of hearing loss. These small, wearable devices boost sound, helping infants hear speech and environmental sounds more clearly. As your infant develops, hearing aids will need to be calibrated regularly to guarantee proper fit and performance.

A cochlear implant may be recommended for a baby with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who does not obtain adequate benefit from hearing aids. Summer is still roaring on, so here's some tips to protect your hearing aids while having fun in the sun!

1. Protect your hearing aids against water! Remove before swimming or showering and dry them after exposure.

2. Deal with sweat and physical activity! Prevent moisture accumulation. Think about using sweatbands or hairbands to soak up excess sweat.

3. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene! It’s essential to periodically inspect your devices for any build-up of debris and take the necessary measures to remove it.

4. Monitor device function and seek professional help! If you detect any changes in sound quality, feedback, or battery life during summer months, don’t wait to get in touch with your hearing care professional.
