After 16 years, our beloved Kate Hartline has retired from Las Trampas. From the moment a participant ran up and shouted, “You’re back!” at her second interview, Kate knew she’d found her place. Over the years, she helped build Las Trampas into a place where people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are seen, celebrated, and given the tools to thrive.

“The folks that I’ve gotten to know here have changed my life,” she shared. “Las Trampas participants are the most resilient, determined folks I’ve ever known. They face enormous challenges, but they never stop striving.

When asked what she’ll miss the most, Kate said: “Morning arrivals. That burst of joy when the buses pull up – that’s how I know we’re doing something right.” And we ARE doing something right – but now, we need your help to keep it going.

We’re facing funding cuts of up to $3.5 million – a third of our budget. That puts critical programs and jobs at risk. Your gift today helps us fulfill ongoing needs of speech-generating devices, occupational and physical therapies, and the exceptional care that families count on. Please donate today to protect the future of Las Trampas at bit.ly/LTSummer25

On July 4th, a sweeping piece of legislation was signed into law, slashing over $1 trillion from Medicaid and Medi-Cal. This is the largest cut to these programs in U.S. history. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that up to 11 million Americans could lose Medicaid coverage as a result. Among them are millions of Californians on Medi-Cal, including nearly everyone we serve. These cuts also threaten the essential services that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) rely on, including the ones we provide every day at Las Trampas.

In California, 35% of IDD service funding comes from Medicaid/Medi-Cal. Without this funding, we’re facing painful losses. Services that our 110 participants rely on every day are at risk. We could lose essential staff, be forced to reduce programming, and see nearly a decade of progress erased. Most devastating of all, we risk failing the very people with IDD that we exist to serve.

Will you consider making a significant gift – and if possible, doubling it – to help us weather this storm? Together, we can stand strong and ensure our participants continue to receive the services, care, and respect they deserve.

Kate Hartline, one of our most beloved team members, has retired from Las Trampas after 16 incredible years! While we are thrilled for her to enjoy a well-earned next chapter, her absence will be felt deeply by our participants, families, and staff.

Kate started her work at Las Trampas as a Direct Support Professional when the job paid just $10/hr because she wanted to give back, not just earn a paycheck. From day one, she brought energy, compassion, and leadership. She created our first walking club, inspired others, and believed in every single person we serve.

One moment Kate shared sticks with us: When Danny joined our day program, staff were told that he would never speak. But Las Trampas doesn’t accept “never” for an answer. Jeff Dollar, a long-time staff member, worked with Danny daily, encouraging him to say “hi, how are you?” They would walk along our beautiful trail, and every time they came upon another person, Jeff would encourage Danny to say, “hi, how are you?” The first time Kate heard Danny say, “hi, how are you?” the pride in his eyes moved Kate to tears. “Seeing participants achieve their goals is one of the best feelings in the world” Kate shared.

These victories are only possible because Las Trampas – and our supporters– never give up. Will you honor Kate’s impact and consider making a gift to support our friends and neighbors with disabilities today? bit.ly/LTSummer25

Our Story

The mission of Las Trampas is to support adults with developmental disabilities to discover their capabilities and to lead fuller lives in their homes, at work and in the community Las Trampas, Inc. - our services include: licensed group homes, supported and independent living services, vocational and developmental day programs. Our services also include health monitoring, nursing care and medical case management by nurses. Our four state licensed group homes, located in Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek, provide the highest level of support to consumers with moderate to severe developmental challenges. Supported Living Services offer a more independent living environment for people who rent homes and apartments in Concord, Lafayette and Pleasant Hill. Supported Living staff are comitted to assisting people with daily activities such as budgeting, locating resources, staying healthy, cooking, shopping and achieving their individual goals. Independent Living Services are designed for people who are able to live in the community with minimal staff support. They may need help in a particular skill such as budeting, menu planning or keeping medial appointments. Each service is based on the person’s Individual Service Plan (ISP). Our Adult Vocational Day Program provides job training and support both on campus and in the community. Local businesses employing our consumers include: City of Walnut Creek, Lafayette Community Center and St. Mary's College. The Adult Development Day Program addresses the needs of those who are medically fragile and/or require more staff support for daily living, social skills, communication, and mobility. The program emphasizes community exploration and leisure activites that promote skills development. Popular activities include: outings to parks, stores, bowling, cooking, crafts, concerts or whatever else the group suggests. All day program participants have access to a variety of activities on the Lafayette Campus that we refer to as the Adult Learning Center. As part of a focus on "Healthy Lifestyles" Las Trampas developed a fitness area for individual and group exercise. In our kitchen, we offer the "Chef's Table" cooking and nutritional classes, food preparation and safety in the kitchen. AccessArt - An art workshop and instructor provide the tools for artistic expression and creativity in different mediums. A sensory room promotes relaxation, stress management and positioning options for people who are non-ambulatory, while stimulating other senses. For over 50 years, Las Trampas has provided the nurturing and respectful learning environment for people with developmental disabilities to thrive, to. We believe that given the right support all persons regardless of disability can participate in their communities.
