When Facilities supervisor Mike Wiese spotted a plain break area wall, he saw an opportunity for creativity and connection.

Last week, our team members came out and transformed the space into a vibrant mural—a celebration of and community spirit.

“What started as a simple idea turned into a fun collaborative effort that everyone enjoyed. We look forward to more projects like this to help create better, more welcoming spaces for both our patients and employees,” says Weise.

When Jack Connaughton completed his final radiation treatment at IU Health Cancer Center – Lafayette, something was missing: the ceremonial bell that many cancer patients ring to mark the end of their journey. The center didn’t have one—until now.

As a way to say thank you for the care her father received, Connaughton’s daughter Stacey gifted the center a bell on behalf of her family, ensuring future patients can celebrate this powerful milestone.

“That bell might be the ultimate culmination of a very exhausting and tiring journey, but it can signal that they made it,” she says. “We can beat the odds, and to me, that’s what the cancer bell signifies.”

When Jack Connaughton finished his last radiation treatment at the IU Health Cancer Center in Lafayette he left the doctor's office without fanfare. His daug...

When a new spoke up about veteran Kenia Montero Ortiz’s exceptional mentoring and leadership skills, the operating team (OR) knew that Montero Ortiz deserved a little something extra to recognize her hard work.

“Kenia’s bubbly and positive personality makes her a standout in our OR. She exudes all the qualities that you’d want in a preceptor or coach when starting a new role,” says one of Montero Ortiz’s colleagues. Because of these qualities, Monero Ortiz recently received the Perioperative Preceptor Award at IU Health Arnett Hospital.

Please join us in congratulating Kenia Montero Ortiz on her award!

It was a sizzling Sunday at the ball field. Our cardiovascular and stroke team members enjoyed celebrating first responders with the Lafayette Aviators. We even got a special visit from players and Ace. The game might have been postponed, but our spirits are high. Thanks for a great season !

Behind the scenes at IU Health, our document management and regulatory teams work tirelessly to keep quality care front and center.

Document Management Specialist Brianna Lerch keeps thousands of policies and procedures up to date and accessible. “Policies are a resource just as much as they are a high-level standard,” she says. “They outline the steps for team members to do their jobs well, from patient care to [time-off] requests.”

Peter Hemmerling, accreditation and regulatory consultant, describes his role as IU Health’s “regulatory Jiminy Cricket,” helping our team understand “what we need to do and how to do it safely.”

Their work ensures continuous readiness. “We don’t want to sprint to prepare at the last minute, we want to be ready all the time,” Hemmerling says.

“Without document management, it would be like trying to run a hospital without a map,” he adds. “And without regulatory support, that map wouldn’t have the rules that keep us pointed in the right direction.”

Their behind-the-scenes efforts help keep patients safe and operations running smoothly every day.

When chaplain Aaron Covert visits patients, it’s often to provide spiritual care or offer a listening ear. Sometimes, though, it’s to address a surprising health concern: social isolation, which can be as harmful to someone’s health as smoking a pack of ci******es a day.

That’s when Covert turns to the Congregational Care Network (CCN), an IU Health program that matches patients experiencing loneliness with trained volunteers from local congregations. These “connectors” commit to weekly phone calls, providing consistent human connection.

“Loneliness isn’t just emotional — it’s a public health concern,” says Covert. “It’s real, and it’s affecting our patients’ health.”

In less than a year, the program is creating impactful changes. Companions report feeling seen and supported, with some even reconnecting with estranged family members.

“Sometimes all it takes is a phone call,” says Covert. “To let someone know they’re not alone.”

To address the need for housing in our communities, IU Health partnered with Habitat for Humanity to sponsor the 2025 Women Build.

On Friday, July 11, a team of IU Health women rolled up their sleeves at two build sites in Lafayette, installing windows, boarding exterior walls, bracing the roof and more. These sites will soon become homes for two families in the Lafayette community.

Our team members left the project feeling empowered by what they accomplished to help families in need. Together, we are “lifting hammers, lifting lives.” 🔨❤️

While clinical team members delivered life-saving care to a patient who nearly drowned, Rose Brady, a member of the registration team in the Emergency department at IU Health White Memorial Hospital, focused her attention on someone else: the patient’s young son, who had discovered his father in distress and acted quickly to get help.

Moved by his bravery, Brady collaborated with her ED team members to create and present a personalized Certificate of Excellence to the young hero, bringing tears to the eyes of both the family and team members.

In moments like this one, Brady stays grounded by remembering that anyone could find themselves in crisis.

“Everybody has bad times,” she says. “It could be me in that position, or one of my family members or friends. I would want them treated with respect.”

That empathy brought comfort to a family in crisis and gave a young boy recognition he’ll carry with him for the rest of his life.

It’s official—a $214-million investment by the IU Health Board of Directors will bring the first full-service hospital to West Lafayette in 2028.

The full-service IU Health West Lafayette hospital will offer a 24/7 Emergency department, inpatient care, multiple operating rooms, a helipad for emergency transportation and advanced imaging and laboratory services.

As part of IU Health’s Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project, a new state-of-the-art cancer center will also be constructed on the Arnett Hospital campus in Lafayette, allowing us to provide essential cancer care and infusion services to even more patients in an environment unlike any other in Greater Lafayette.

“As Greater Lafayette continues to grow and thrive—with new investment and new industry announced regularly—so does the need for essential healthcare services,” says Art Vasquez, president of IU Health’s West Region.

“This project represents IU Health’s commitment to growing with our community, but it isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about fulfilling a promise we made years ago and meeting the needs of a growing community with care that’s close to home.”

Together, the Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project will bring more than 210 new full-time healthcare jobs to our community by 2030, including 29 physicians, 10 advanced practice providers and 69 nurses, along with 100-plus other essential healthcare positions.

The Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project is a $214 million investment in ensuring access to healthcare, close to home.
