Achievement is something our society often focuses on. There are so many boxes that we’re pressured to check off before we can give ourselves a break:
✔️ career
✔️ family
✔️ romance
✔️ grades
✔️ appearance
This mindset can often spill into our yoga practice as well. “Go deeper,” “push farther,” “hold longer.” I want to get “my splits,” “my handstand,” “my full bind.” These are all things that you might hear in an average class, or maybe things you have even said to yourself at one point or another.
While there’s nothing wrong with challenging ourselves, how can we encourage growth without focusing on an end result or finish line?
Restorative yoga challenges us in a different way. It challenges us to shift from achieving to simply experiencing. When you lay fully supported in a shape there is no finish line, no goalpost, no “fullest expression of the pose.” It’s just you sitting with yourself, your thoughts, and your breath. No one should have to feel guilty for making space and time for themselves. It’s hard sometimes, but we must remember that being is just as important as doing, resting is just as important as pushing, experiencing is just as important as achieving.
