“Pharaoh had hundreds of goods and riches.
So he laid claim to omnipotence and majesty.

During his entire life, he didn’t feel the ordeals that lead one to awaken.

Grief is worth more than the empire of this world
because it offers you the chance to surrender.

The cries of those who have never suffered are cold and dull:
The cries of the agonized spring from ecstasy.”

- Rumi

“Pray
to be humble.

O pray to be honest,
and kind.

I know you have a hundred complex cases
against life,

but never mind, wayfarer,
let’s get out of this mess

and pray to be loving and humble
so that your true essence will reveal

itself

so

near!”

“Whenever my thoughts turn toward greed, acquisitiveness, or stinginess, my shoulders tense up, and it feels as if I’m holding my breath.

I don’t judge the thoughts, I just become aware of my suffering. As I become present with my body’s sensations I notice a shift from tension to ease.

What seemed so important to possess loses its appeal and freedom from grasping seems to appear automatically.”

- John Tarrant

“Attachment is the very opposite of love.

Love says, ‘I want you to be happy.’
Attachment says, ‘I want you to make me happy.’”

“When we see others as the enemy,
we risk becoming what we hate.

When we oppress others, we
end up oppressing ourselves.

All of our humanity is
dependent upon recognizing
the humanity in others.”

- Desmond TuTu

“Sometimes, when one sees a person suffering, it generates happiness: ‘He’s getting what he deserves!’

In order to change your attitude—that is, if you decide that compassion is worth cultivating—you first have to find out how to change it.

For most of us it is obvious that when a friend suffers, we’re unhappy; if an enemy suffers, we’re happy. And toward those who are neutral, we’re indifferent. If we read that someone we don’t know is in the hospital or has died, we pass on to the next topic.

If we are to generate great compassion, equal compassion for every being, it will be necessary to see all beings as close and dear as our own best friend. To do this, it is necessary to see that, in certain respects, all beings are equal.

Everyone wants happiness and doesn’t want suffering. This realization of similarity is not superficial. When we cultivate this reflection through meditation, the way we interact with other people changes and we awaken to the expansiveness of our hearts.”

“Many of us have a mind that measures self-worth in terms of productivity.

If I did not produce anything today, if I did not bake bread, earn money, sell something, buy something, get a good grade on a test, or find my soul mate, then my day was wasted and I am a failure. We give ourselves no credit for taking ‘being’ time; for being present.

And yet, if you asked the people you care about what they would like most from you, their answer is likely to be some version of ‘your presence’ or ‘your loving attention.’

Presence has no measurable product except positive feelings, feelings of support, intimacy, and happiness. When we awaken to the present moment, we ourselves will also feel support, intimacy, and happiness, even if no one else is around.

These positive feelings are a product that is much desired but that cannot be bought. They are the natural result of presence. They are a birthright that we have forgotten we have.”

“I was reminded of the Four Immutable Laws of the Spirit:

Whoever is present are the right people.

Whenever it begins is the right time.

Whatever happens is the only thing that could have happened.

And when it's over, it's over.”

- Anne Lamott

“How are we to forgive our fathers?
Maybe in a dream…

Do we forgive our fathers
For leaving us too often
or forever when we were little.
For scaring us with unexpected rage,
or making us nervous because
there never seemed to be any rage there at all?

Do we forgive our fathers
For marrying or not marrying our mothers,
for divorcing or not divorcing our mothers?

And shall we forgive them for their excesses of
warmth or coldness?

Shall we forgive them for pushing or leaning,
for shutting doors, for speaking through walls,
or never speaking or never being silent?

Do we forgive our fathers in our age or in theirs,
or in their deaths, saying it to them or not saying it?

If we forgive our fathers, what else is left?

—Dick Lourie

“There is no denying that consideration of others is worthwhile.

There is no denying that our happiness is inextricably bound up with the happiness of others.

There is no denying that if society suffers, we ourselves suffer. Nor is there any denying that the more our hearts and minds are afflicted with ill-will, the more miserable we become.

Thus we can reject everything else: religion, ideology, all received wisdom. But, we cannot escape the necessity of love and compassion.”

- H.H. the Dalai Lama

“Some people believe that the path of meditation is very strict and serious or that to be spiritual, one has to be gloomy or indifferent.

On the contrary, as we advance in the practice we find it is about joy and creativity. We begin to take ourselves less seriously and enjoy life so much more as we open to its changing and ever-fluctuating nature. We dance and sing with life. We have become friends with our body and mind.

As we accept ourselves and the world, our creativity unfolds. Fears and insecurities soften and at moments dissolve altogether. We can express ourselves through everything we do and everyone we are with. Everything we do can become an art; it is not a duty anymore; it is a way to express our true nature.”
