To help stabilize and deepen your upper body while giving your hands a more forward tendencyโ€ฆ

Imagine your shoulder blades in the shape of a big heart on your back. Move your shoulders slightly up, widen them and then bring them down and together. As you connect your shoulders, push your hands forward.โ€”Susanne von Dietze

In more masterclass news, I am thrilled to be returning to the US for a special two day masterclass this October; my first return to New England in nearly five years!

This NEDA Symposium takes place on October 15-16 at Mt. Holyoke College Equestrian Center in South Hadley, Massachusetts. For this yearโ€™s event, I look forward to working with horse and rider pairs spanning up the levels from young horse to Grand Prix level. NEDA members can purchase tickets when the pre-sale opens on June 11th. A limited number of VIP tickets will also be for sale. If any tickets remain, tickets to the public will go on sale on July 11. Hope to see some of you there!

5 Reasons why you should hit the mat between horseback riding lessons

For this Thursdayโ€™s NEDA Know-How session, we are pleased to welcome Jillian Kreinbring to discuss dressage through the lens of biomechanics. Defined as the study of the mechanical laws relating to the movement or structure of living organisms, biomechanics is one of our most-requested topics, and we look forward to this opportunity to speak with one of the leading researchers in this area. NEDA members, please check your email or visit our website to register: https://www.neda.org/events/register.aspx?id=1549015&itemid=c3c97b74-b56c-4b90-a6fd-4f014d463ae8

Learn how to understand your own body in order to address your specific position challenges.

I donโ€™t know who needs to hear this, but you are doing just fine.

Stop beating yourself up for not riding when itโ€™s freezing cold, pitch black and raining. Itโ€™s ok (and normal) to have no motivation at this time of year. It doesnโ€™t make you a bad rider (or a bad owner).

Stop feeling guilty that your horse isnโ€™t even nearly competition fit yet. Take your time and make your plan, who cares if youโ€™re not ready for the first event? Thereโ€™s a whole calendar to chose from.

Stop agonising over the fact you havenโ€™t spent the whole winter training. Riders need a break and horses do to, youโ€™ll probably find your horse comes back better than if theyโ€™d spent the whole winter being hammered in clinics and lessons anyway.

Stop comparing yourself to riders who have more facilities, more time or a totally different set of circumstances to you. Everyone is on their own track and has their own goals, so eyes ahead and focus on yours.

Stop telling yourself that your horse โ€œdeserves betterโ€ or is โ€œwastedโ€ with you. As long as your horse is fed and warm, they are quite happy, riding does not complete their life.

Winter is hard. Itโ€™s cold, itโ€™s wet, itโ€™s dark and it feels never ending and berating yourself for everything you arenโ€™t doing or feel you should be doing wonโ€™t make it any easier, so cut yourself some slack and just take a breath.

You are doing just fine.

I am officially almost done with the requirements needed for my 200 HR Yoga Teacher Training certification! I wanted to do this for a few reasons, but was most influenced by some riding (and reading) I did with Sherry Ackerman this year, author of Dressage in the Fourth Dimension. In her book, she writes

โ€œBreath control and posture are central to relaxation. In Indian philosophy, the term for breath control is pranayama, and for posture, asana. Both breathing technique and position are as critical to dressage as they are to yoga. How many times has a clinician instructed you to โ€œbreatheโ€ and โ€œsit tallโ€? To become accomplished in either takes considerable practice and presupposes a thorough commitment to spirituality. For as the body progressively relaxes and โ€œlets go,โ€ the mind follows by suspending cognition. In this yielded state, the practitioner is extremely inclined toward spiritual insight and becomes aware that dressage offers the experience of attaining transcendental union with a partner. Most other yogic disciplines are yogas-of-one, but dressage is a yoga-of-two.โ€

I am learning to appreciate dressage more as an art than a sport, mostly due to my current mentors who are all about developing lightness and harmony โœจ

In addition to a more artistic and creative expression of horse and rider, yoga also ..

โœจhelps to balance muscle tone through the asanas (poses). I am right-side dominant and have always struggled becoming ambidextrous for dressage riding.

โœจhelps free physical blockages and tensions while increasing flexibilityโ€™s daily range of motion (to allow your body to go WITH the movement of the horse).

โœจ strengthens core and balance (better half halts)

โœจ Helps with mental stress (who doesnโ€™t need that these days) and sets you up with a positive mindset before even getting on the horse.

I find the study of yoga to be a great way to work with people and their bodyโ€™s without a hands-on approach. Many hands-on modalities had to be shut down during quarantine. Yoga classes could still be held online and is great for work with kids. I throughly enjoying this journey and will keep racking up the hours (for a total of 1,000 hours of study!)

But the ability to roll the pelvis, not balance, is the key, researchers found.
