As we continue honoring Black History Month, we're highlighting the Black pioneers who helped shape chiropractic care -- not just as patients, but as leaders, doctors, and educators.

Fred Rubel made history as the first Black chiropractor, graduating from the National School of Chiropractic in 1913. At a time when segregation and systemic barriers limited access to medical education, Rubel's achievement was both groundbreaking and courageous.

In 1922, he founded the Rubel College of Chiropractic in Chicago, Illinois -- one of the earliest chiropractic schools to openly admit students regardless of race. The school stood as a beacon of opportunity and helped expand access to professional chiropractic education at a time when mainstream institutions were inaccessible to many Black students.

This Black History Month, we're highlighting the important contributions of Black individuals to the history of chiropractic care. Throughout the month, we'll be sharing two posts each week honoring pioneers, patients, and doctors whose stories helped shape this profession. 🖤

We're starting at the very beginning!

Harvey J. Lillard, a Black man living in Davenport, Iowa, is recognized as the first chiropractic patient. After losing his hearing approximately 17 years earlier, Lillard received an adjustment from D.D. Palmer in 1895. Following the adjustment, Lillard reported a significant restoration of his hearing -- a moment that marked the beginning of chiropractic care as we know it!

Lillard's experience laid the foundation for an entire profession and serves as an important reminder that Black history is woven into chiropractic from its very first chapter! Stay tuned as we continue to highlight Black leaders, innovators, and doctors who advanced chiropractic care and access for generations to come. ✨

If your baby consistently turns their head to one side - or seems to have a “favorite” direction when looking, nursing, or sleeping - that pattern often reflects how their neck and upper spine are adapting.

Even during smooth births, a baby’s delicate spine can experience pressure that leads to tightness or imbalance. When one side of the neck carries more tension, it can influence how comfortably they:
🍼 Nurse or latch on both sides
🛏️ Rest without twisting their head
💤 Stay asleep throughout the night
💫 Move and develop in a balanced way

There’s a kind of exhaustion that sleep alone doesn’t fix. The kind that lingers even when you’ve had a “slow weekend” or checked all the boxes for rest.

That’s nervous system fatigue - and it’s what happens when your body has been running in overdrive for too long.

When the nervous system is stuck in stress mode, it burns through energy inefficiently. Hormones like cortisol stay elevated, digestion slows, and your cells never fully recharge. Over time, your body starts pulling from reserves that were never meant for daily use.

Your lower back is one of the most responsive areas of the body to stress. When your nervous system shifts into a protective state, the muscles supporting your spine shorten, tighten, and brace.
