Molly Greig Life Coach Does the clutter in your head paralize you?

I help my clients recognize the destructive and self-defeating nature of some of their learned thought patterns and perceptions which can often spiral out of control and become paralyzing. Molly is passionately committed to helping others also discover a well-balanced and rewarding life of their own design.

Summer Speaker Series
July 2012 Highlights
Your Child's Cheerleader - Fostering Emotional Wellness
with Molly Greig

Molly shared her story of how struggling as a child with a learning disability left her plagued with feelings of embarrassment and frustration, and how it wasn't until she developed her own self-esteem that she became comfortable enough to "take off the mask" she wore for years that prevented others seeing her struggles.
We often see students come to our center with these "masks". Many students with learning disabilities are experts at masking, or coping with inefficient or weak skills - but this doesn't solve the problem and can lead to feelings of embarrassment and poor self-image.
We talked about how negative feelings of shame and embarrassment for a child with a disability are like wearing a "heavy backpack" that can continue to get heavier and weigh him down. What is in your child's backpack?
You may be your child's biggest cheerleader, but who is there to cheer them on when you cannot? That is why it is so important to develop your child's "inner cheerleader" of self-esteem and self-empowerment. This will help to start to "unload" not only her backpack, but yours as well!
At our center, we help develop students' self-esteem by developing their underlying learning skills to make them comfortable, independent learners. At home, you can also develop self-esteem by using this same underlying approach - developing interests, talents, and positive self-talk.

When I went to my first day of third grade, I found that I was in a different class than the one that all my first and second grade classmates and friends were in. I hadn't tested well at the end of second grade, I guess (a little learning disabled, it seems) ... so found myself kicked out of the advanced class and placed with the "B" students. I felt dumb and ashamed and was totally devastated. Talk about low self-esteem at the ripe old age of eight! How fortunate for me that the fabulous teacher I was assigned, Mrs. May, could easily see what was happening to me. Mrs. May believed in me. She encouraged my capabilities and strengths. She helped me see my personal pluses and was a regular Team Molly cheerleader. From then on I was aware that I had a learning disability, but knew that I could overcome it by using my personal gifts and strengths. I saw my potential. I have been able to change my inner "loser" voice into a inner "winner" voice. That new inner voice is the tool that I use to maneuver thru life. To understand and experience the life that I choose without feeling helpless and isolated. I have a clear sense of what I'm good at . I know what I'm not great at and when to ask for help.

In one of his plays, William Shakespeare wrote: All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts.

I wonder if you are suffering mightily from a serious case of
“stage fright.” You felt so safe and familiar with that old “script” that you performed so well over the years. The “play” was difficult for you in many respects, and not good for you, but at least you had it down pat, felt safe with it, knew all of your “lines” and pretty much knew how the “audience” would respond. Now that you’re beginning a new “play” with a new “script,” you feel frightened and unsure about both how well you can “perform” and how the “audience” will respond. You know that your new “script” is
better, will be better received by the “audience” and may well give you the opportunity to give the best “performance” of your “career.” But still “opening night” is scary.

I truly believe that you have been resisting the decision-making process by finding reason after reason to turn down your part in a new wonderful “play” because, in large part, it means that you are accepting a new “role” and have new “lines” and “stage movements” to learn. Have faith in yourself, dear. You will find that once you get through “opening night” the fear will start to go away. With
each successful “performance,” you will begin to enjoy the new “play,” your ability to “perform” on a level that you didn’t even know was possible, and the great respect of the “audience” for what you have accomplished and shown them is possible.

The “audience” is totally behind you. They are looking forward to your new “role” and know that your talents were wasted on the old “play” and that greater “roles” have awaited you. So don’t be afraid to stretch and reach for the stars ... they are yours for the taking.

At this very moment, it’s opening night and the Curtain Is Rising!
