Facts, Not Fear - Part 2
“You’re gonna hurt your baby’s hips if you sit them up before they can sit on their own” 🤪
Three things we want to look at 👇🏼
🔬Research
There’s currently no research that has established early supported sitting as a risk factor for hip dysplasia.
🌎 Epidemiology
Rates of hip dysplasia in the U.S. are very much within the global average. In regions where it’s common practice to sit babies up before they can do it independently, we would expect higher rates if this actually contributed to dysplasia and we don’t see that.
💪🏼 Biomechanics
The position of a baby’s hips in supported sitting naturally promotes flexion and abduction which is the position that supports healthy hip development.
All that to say 👇🏼
If your baby is typically developing, there is no reason you cannot reasonably sit them in your lap with support. You are not hurting them 🤍
Now don’t forget sitting shouldn’t become the go to at this age. Tummy time and floor play are still the most important for building the foundation of your baby’s motor skills. Think of supported sitting as something you can sprinkle in not replace the basics.
