Does Schizophrenia affect Adolescents?
IPMG’s Research Dept would like to take a moment today to touch on the symptoms and presentation of Schizophrenia in adolescents.
Schizophrenia can be thought of as a brain disorder. It is diagnosed when symptoms start to emerge possibly in adolescence or late adolescence and early adulthood.
• Difficulty with perceptions or having altered perceptions such as hearing voices that others do not hear, or seeing things others do not see
• Changes in behavior such as withdrawing from social interactions , changes in sleep patterns such as staying awake during the night and sleeping during the day.
• Difficulty with thoughts and attention. Concentration can be affected along with having very disorganized thoughts that are jumbled up or come out in jumbled up speech.
~ these are just some of the symptoms and often they can be subtle in the beginning with slow but progressive outcomes like having difficulty at school and academic decline. It can also have an effect on personal relationships as they become more isolative, paranoid or sleeping during the day.
Understanding Schizophrenia isn’t just for those affected by the disorder or whom have family members with the diagnosis, it can help bring down the stigma when more of us understand the signs & symptoms.
