FUCT FACT: During the 19th century, there was a widespread fear of being buried alive. Addressing this fear, manufacturers developed “safety coffins” including systems with bells, to allow someone buried alive to signal for help. A bell was placed above ground near the grave. Inside the coffin, a string or mechanism was attached to the bell, allowing the person to ring it if they woke up. It is believed the phrase “saved by the bell” originates from this practice.
