Counseling Staff Spotlight✨

John Suyama aka Mich

Meet one of our compassionate counselors at BYUH! He has been part of the Counseling Services team for a little over two years and loves working with students from all around the world. For him, it’s a privilege to be part of a university community that promotes peace and strives to live the teachings of Jesus Christ.

His goal is to help remove the stigma around seeking mental health support. Just as students would visit the health center when they’re physically unwell, he hopes they’ll feel comfortable coming to Counseling Services when life’s challenges arise.

Originally from Tachikawa, Japan, he grew up near a U.S. military base where both his parents worked and graduated from Yokota High School. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family—especially his amazing daughter, Susie—while exploring hidden food spots and new adventures around the island.

A few fun facts: he’s mastered driving Japan’s narrow streets and is known at home as the sous chef, grill master, and pancake professional. His go-to comfort food? His wife’s kimchee fried rice.

His favorite quote is one that guides his outlook on life:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” — Martin Luther King Jr. 🌿
