We are excited to announce the launch of a new thiamine (Vitamin B1) testing platform, the Erythrocyte Transketolase Activity Coefficient (ETKAC), from the Clinical Immunology Laboratory at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, IL.

Thiamine is the precursor to the coenzyme thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), also known as thiamine diphosphate (TDP/ThDP). This essential B vitamin is crucial for human metabolism, playing a vital role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fatty acids, and proteins, and is important for maintaining nerve function.

The ETKAC assay is a functional enzymatic test that assesses the activity of the thiamine-dependent enzyme, erythrocyte transketolase, in both its resting and activated states. Unlike other thiamine testing methods, the ETKAC offers a functional evaluation of activated thiamine within cells and identifies potential issues with thiamine-dependent enzymes. Currently, the test is available upon physician request, and we aim to provide more direct access in the future.

Thank you Lake County Children's Advocacy Center (LCCAC) for the recognition and awarding members of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science the Fred Foreman Award.

We appreciate your partnership and friendship as we work together to launch the first Outpatient Pediatric/Adolescent Sexual Assault Medical Clinic, intentionally and thoughtfully, located within the LCCAC in Gurnee, IL.

We will close the gap to deliver critical medical examinations to children who are survivors of sexual assault.
