Grace’s Scoliosis Journey

Grace’s Scoliosis Journey This page is to share our story about Grace’s journey with Scoliosis.

I know we haven’t posted on a long time. Just to give an update. Yesterday marked one year from Grace’s surgery. She is doing very well. She still sore and discomfort from time to time. Especially when it gets cold down here. We go to Houston later this month for her one year post-op apt.

Grace’s first day of school was spent at Texas Children’s for her 6mth post-op apt. Her spine is not completely fused yet but it is looking good. Her top curve is 23 degrees and bottom is 20 degrees. The day of her surgery (February 2, 2021) her top curve was 92 degrees and bottom was 90 degrees. Her Dr. is happy with her results. She is still limited on some activities. No P.E. at school for now, no contact sports, and until she is 9 months post-op no trampoline then she can only jump by herself. Grace is excited she can ride in the boat as long as it isn’t too rough and ride on the 4-wheeler. Thank you all for the continued prayers. We really appreciate them all. We go back middle of February for her year apt.

So I know it been a long time since we have updated y’all. Grace summer has been going good. She is getting stronger every week. It is hard to believe it has been 5 1/2 mths since her surgery. She is doing awesome. We go back to Houston middle of August and can’t wait to see her scans and hopefully find out her spine is fussed. Continue prayers for healing.

A classmate of mine son had surgery this past Wednesday please pray his pain gets manageable and pray for healing.

It is so hard to have to watch your child or any child be in pain and not be able to take it away.

Hi everyone. Hope everyone is doing great. We wanted to share an update with y’all.

Grace has been attending school all day. She is doing really well. Today was the first day she didn’t have an ibuprofen to help her get through the day, so that is a big step.

She had a 2 month check up last week and it went very well. Her scan showed that her top curve is at 35 and her bottom curve is at 18. We couldn’t be more excited for this news. Her Dr. was hoping he would be able to get it straighter but that is all her spine would allow and given how significant her curves were he is happy with her results. She still can’t participate in PE or sports but with time she will be able too. She can bend slightly at the waist backwards and forwards (baby steps) and her ribs are close to being spread apart how they should be (they shifted closer together do to her spine), her intestines now how the room it should, her incision is healing nicely.

We just want to thank everyone who has been praying for her. She is recovering well.

Sorry We haven’t updated for awhile. Grace has been doing online homebound for the last few weeks. She is doing pretty good with it. This week she will be able to return to school. The Dr. wants her to start with half days but if she feels like she can stay longer. She is only allowed to sit, stand, and lay down. She is only able to lift about 20 lbs and can’t bend at the waist. We got her a rolling backpack to help her keep the weight off her back. Prayers are still needed as she continues to heal.

Thank you everyone for the continued prayers. We appreciate them all. Grace had a virtual Dr. appointment Friday for her 2 week follow-up.

He said her womb dressing can come off when it is ready. She needs to continue to walk and work on sitting up. She will still be limited for 6 mths. She isn’t allowed to bend at the waist, no PE or physical activities, limited to lifting more than 20-25 lbs, and if she swims she must have a shirt on (he doesn’t want her back exposed to the sun).

Her next Dr. apt will be in 6 weeks in office. At this apt she will take new X-rays and we will be able to see the degree her curves are. We are hoping they are reduced by half if not a little more.

Hi everyone. It has been several days since I updated everyone. Graces pain is getting better each day. She is getting around better and able to rest. This winter storm has us staying inside and her walking around the house. Thanks to everyone for all the prayers. Please keep them coming.

Good evening. Sorry I didn’t post anything yesterday. We have the new pain medicine and it is working much better than the previous one. She was able to sleep better the last 2 nights. She still has some pain but it is more manageable than before. Pleased keep the prayers coming for complete healing.

Last night was another bad night for Grace. Today we were able to get her some medicine to hold her over until we get her correct prescription tomorrow. She seems a little better right now. We are praying it continues. We just need her to be able to get a little bit of relief. She did eat a little bit more today than she has been. Which is a good sign to us because she hasn’t been wanting to eat anything. Please continue with the prayers.

So we made it home around 3:45 yesterday. Grace was in a lot of pain from all the dang bumps on the road. You don’t realize how bad the roads really are until you feel every bump and it causes so much pain.

At 4am this morning Grace was in so much pain and none of the medication we were giving her helped, so we loaded her up and took her to Cal-Cam Hospital. They checked us in right away, took us straight to triage, and in the back. I went through the whole spill with surgery and all several times and they ended up giving her nausea medication and a pain shot. We were in and out within 30 mins or less.

Today I called the Dr. office and got her the correct pain medication that works for her called out and we should be getting it Wednesday morning bc it had to be ordered. I called close to 20 pharmacies looking for it.

Prayers that the pain medicine she has will help with her pain until we can get the correct one.

Update... Grace had a better night and was able to sleep more than she has been. It takes a while for her to find a comfortable spot. She would wake up in pain and we (nurse Elaine, and I) moved her to different spots and she would go back to sleep. The new pain medicine seemed to be working. She walked 4 rounds of the floor this floor this morning. She is still in pain but we are being released since is seems to be more manageable now. We will head back home in I-10 😳 praying to hit the least amount of bumps as possible. Please keep the prayers coming for her pain to decrease more.

Grace found one nurse she really likes. This nurse went above and beyond yesterday for her. To help get Grace to relax she brought her personal cell phone in our room and played meditation music for her. The nurse said I have never left my phone in a patients room before. It didn’t take long and Grace was relaxed and asleep. Nurse Sara even text me the meditation so I had it to use. Grace asked Sara if she would be her nurse today and she said I don’t know. She asked Grace why and Grace said “not all nurses are soft and kind like you, I won’t you to be my nurse tomorrow.” Sara left the room and went to make sure she could have Grace today.
A huge thank you to Nurse Sara for making yesterday and tomorrow more relaxing for Grace. From the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU
