One piece of advice they forget to tell you…

In those first few weeks of breastfeeding, when rinsing your underarms in the shower, cover your ni**le with your opposite hand. The water pressure that feels like a massage on your achey back feels like a thousand tiny swords on your sore ni**les.

Sometimes in the early days of a new baby, we start to get worried about milk supply. Maybe we had an abundant supply with a previous baby and expected the same or maybe a well meaning person is telling us our baby doesn’t seem satisfied, or maybe baby just wants to nurse constantly and we start to feel like maybe they aren’t getting enough.

Then we start grasping at advice to try out. We might buy expensive supplements, start an exhausting pumping schedule, or start eating lactation cookies morning noon and night.

There is a much simpler way to ensure a good milk supply and it’s what our ancestors have always done. Their babies were well-fed.

The best (and easiest) thing to do is keep baby at the breast almost constantly for the first two weeks. You’ll feel like all you’re doing is nursing. This will signal your body to make milk for baby consistently. Skin to skin with baby as much as possible. Commit to being home with baby and sitting and nursing for the first 2 weeks. I recommend staying one week in the bedroom, in bed with baby. Then the second week you can wander around the house and spend most of the day in the living room with baby. This does a few things: Ensures you’re resting and recovering. Ensures baby is nursing often. Ensures family is taking care of your other duties so you can focus on making milk. (Most cultures outside of the US have this lying in period, most are for 40 days. 2 weeks is usually doable for most families)
Offer the breast every hour to every two hours. Don’t go more than one four hour stretch at night between feeds. This doesn’t mean watch the clock, it just means don’t push feedings apart and nurse as often as baby wants. If baby fusses or even makes a peep, offer the breast. My usual method is offer the breast, nurse until baby unlatched or stops actively swallowing for a while. Burp baby. Change diaper. Offer breast again, this time the b**b baby didnt just finish. Baby may want to nurse again or may be full at this point. If baby falls asleep you can lay them down or keep holding them.. with other children it might be a great time to put them down. When they wake again offer the breast.

It’s not like this for long but it really helps your body establish a good milk supply. Then after baby is nursing well and you’re feeling like you’ve got the hang of it just continue to follow baby’s cues and nurse as a first response to any fuss/grunt/or whimper from baby. Don’t wake baby to nurse them if all is going well. Just offer the breast as soon as they wake up.

If you have any latch issues or if baby seems unusually unhappy, then some gentle help may be necessary. The best thing is usually the simplest most natural.

One of the most underrated parenting tools is your imagination. I’ve saved many days by using my imagination. Making up games in a waiting room, in a restaurant waiting for food, in a long car ride. Being silly to loosen up bad moods. Telling stories to ease fear of the dark or storms, or to get through a rough day. Using our imaginations doesn’t stop when we become adults. Our imagination serves us so well when raising our family.

Bundled up on this cold rainy day to visit one of my favorite clients!
One thing that’s very important to me is to drive to my clients. It’s so hard packing up your family to go to appointments and I remember how much of an ordeal it was when my babies were young. Almost all my appointments are home visits so that you get to stay in your nest.
Your care is directed by you, so if home visits don’t work for you, my home is always open.

Part of why social media advertising works is by convincing you that you need something or can’t do without it. Here’s where what I do doesn’t fit into social media advertising and why I don’t feel the need to make constant posts. Because you don’t need anything from anyone to have a healthy baby, or a good birth. You have everything you need. And no one can ensure the outcome you desire, not an OB, not a surgeon, not a midwife, not a doula. I’m not here to convince anyone that they need me or that they can’t do it without me. The truth is, you are so knowledgeable and powerful when you stand in your innate wisdom.
What I am here for is to remind you of that wisdom. To show you your power. To lift you up. To offer all that I have to serve you in the places you need support. I offer my hands, my constant desire to learn and grow, my deep understanding, my strong nurturing spirit. What I offer is what I couldn’t find when I needed it. So I committed to having it in my basket to help my community.
If you want birth preparation, I’m here.
If you want a loving presence to witness your birth transformation, I’m here.
If you want a wise woman, who loves you, to remind you who you are, I’m here.
If you want loving touch, I’m here.
If you want someone to answer the phone at 3am and show up at your door, I’m here.
If you want your baby to feel whole and well in their body, I’m here.
If you want to work through life stuff and have someone truly listen with love and understanding, I’m here.
If you want someone to help mediate between family members or care providers, I’m here.
If you want to build a strong support system, I’m here.
All that I have I offer to you.
